Bulgy the Bus is a supporting antagonist of the Thomas & Friends franchise. He is an evil bus who hates the railway and seeks to destroy it.

In the animated series, he is voiced by Colin McFarlane.

Biography

Bulgy first appeared in the story of the same name in Railway series book: "Oliver the Western Engine" and its television series adaptation episode, during the third season. He attempts to deceive the public into thinking he is a railway bus and attempts to take them along a shortcut, but gets stuck under a low bridge. He is later pulled out and used as a henhouse.

Exactly 100 episodes later, in the television series, Bulgy is repaired and reformed in the episode, "Bulgy Rides Again". Later, Bulgy returns once more in Seasons 21, 23, and 24.

Trivia

• It is possible that Bulgy was friends with George the Steamroller.
• Bulgy could be a foil to Diesel. They are both jealous of the steam engines for different reasons (Diesel was jealous of the steam engines because they were more useful than him and the other diesels, and Bulgy was jealous of the steam engines because their passengers were always traveling by railway instead of by road). They also try to be better than the steam engines. In the special, Misty Island Rescue, Diesel tried to take the Jobi Logs to the Sodor Search and Rescue Center. In the Season 23 episode, "Free the Roads", Bulgy contaminated the water tower with a bag of soil, so that he could make the steam engines sick, and take their passengers. However, they end up causing confusion and delay when they do something wrong. Diesel lost the Jobi Logs when he could not stop himself from moving towards the unfinished bridge, and Bulgy's tire blew out when he was carrying too many passengers. After that, they learn that they can work with the steam engines. But while Diesel is able to let go of his jealousy (despite thinking that diesels are still better than steam engines), Bulgy still thinks that the roads are better than the railways. Bulgy serves an example of what Diesel would have become if he let his jealousy of the steam engines consume him.
