Bullworth Academy are the overarching antagonists of the 2006 action-adventure video game Bully.
Known for its harsh discipline, outdated traditions, and deeply fractured social environment, it is an independent boarding school located in the town of Bullworth, situated in the New England region of the United States, which is considered by the narrative to be the worst school of the country.
On the surface, it presents itself as a prestigious institution dedicated to education and character building, but in reality it is plagued by rampant bullying, clique rivalries, and ineffective authority figures who often contribute to the chaos rather than control it. The campus is divided into distinct social territories controlled by groups such as the Bullies, Preppies, Greasers, Nerds, and Jocks, each maintaining its own hierarchy and norms. Instead of fostering genuine learning or personal growth, Bullworth Academy becomes a microcosm of conflict and power struggles, exposing the school's failure to protect or guide its students. As a result, the Academy functions less as a haven for education and more as a volatile social arena where survival, respect, and dominance overshadow academic goals.
While not every agent at the academy is inherently malicious, the institution's overall behavior and mindset function as the driving force behind the major villains and act as the broader catalyst and backdrop for the events that unfold throughout the game's narrative.
Biography[]
Overview[]
The exact founding date of Bullworth Academy is never given, but the institution has likely been operating for several decades. Several adult characters, including the fathers of Derby Harrington and Gary Smith, and even Dr. Crabblesnitch, are implied to have attended the academy during their youth. This suggests that Bullworth was established at least thirty to forty years before the events of the game and has maintained a long, if troubled, history.
By the time Jimmy Hopkins enrolls, Dr. Crabblesnitch has been the principal for many years. Although he presents himself as strict and morally authoritative, he is largely ineffective at maintaining real order. His administration relies heavily on prefects, who are teenage enforcers prone to abusing their power, and on a staff of eccentric teachers whose personal flaws often compromise their ability to educate or protect students. Through years of corruption, neglect, and institutional complacency, the school has allowed its cliques to expand into powerful autonomous factions that dominate campus life. As Jimmy himself remarks, the academy's alumni include arms dealers, serial killers, and corporate lawyers, a darkly humorous detail that further highlights the deep dysfunction embedded in the school's culture and legacy.
Bullworth Academy is composed of nine main buildings that shape the core of its campus environment. These include the boys' dorm, the girls' dorm, the main academic building, the library, the auto repair shop, Harrington House, the gym, the jocks clubhouse, and the observatory. Several other structures appear throughout the grounds, but they do not play a significant role in the events of the game.
Academically, Bullworth provides at least twelve distinct classes that cover a wide range of subjects. These include art, biology, chemistry, English, geography, gym, history, home economics, math, music, photography, and shop. Together, these facilities and courses present the outward appearance of a fully functioning and diverse educational institution, even though the school's internal culture often prevents it from fulfilling that potential.
The school also features a football field that serves both athletic activities and various missions. The athletics program at Bullworth Academy plays a major role in the school's identity and daily life. The institution promotes a variety of sports, including soccer, wrestling, boxing, dodgeball, and several others, although its most celebrated activity is football and its team, the Bullworth Bullhorns. The campus facilities reflect this emphasis on physical competition, featuring a dedicated football field, a full size gymnasium equipped with a wooden basketball court, and an old swimming pool that has fallen into disuse. These spaces highlight the school's long-standing focus on athletics, even as other aspects of student life receive far less attention or support.
The academy employs 17 staff members and has an enrollment of 60 students in total (except 4 prefects).
Bully[]
When Jimmy Hopkins, a rebellious yet principled 15-year-old, is dropped off at Bullworth after being expelled from multiple schools, he enters a campus already divided into hostile groups: the Bullies who torment newcomers; the aristocratic Preppies who cling to family prestige; the mechanically inclined Greasers who control the town's industrial quarter; the Nerds who weaponize intelligence for survival; and the athletic Jocks who dominate the school's sports culture. Each clique controls territory, traditions, and internal power structures, resulting in constant conflict.
Bullworth's modern history becomes defined by Jimmy's arrival. Manipulated by Gary Smith, a scheming student who seeks to destabilize the school's social balance, Jimmy becomes embroiled in a series of escalating conflicts. Through missions across the school and wider town, Jimmy confronts each clique's leaders (Russell, Derby, Johnny, Earnest, and Ted) bringing temporary peace by exposing corruption and challenging abusive authority. His involvements reveal deep-rooted structural failures: teachers who ignore bullying, staff who play favorites, and systems that reward hierarchy over fairness.
As the story progresses, Bullworth itself becomes a stage for Gary's ambition. By exploiting the fractures between cliques and orchestrating chaos around campus, Gary aims to overthrow the prefects, embarrass Dr. Crabblesnitch, and seize power for himself. His schemes culminate in the fall of Bullworth Academy, a school-wide riot that forces students, teachers, prefects, and administrators into open conflict. Jimmy ultimately confronts Gary atop the school clock tower, exposing the administration's incompetence and Gary's manipulation.
In the aftermath, Bullworth experiences rare clarity: Crabblesnitch recognizes that Jimmy had been trying to stabilize the school, not destroy it, and publicly praises him for restoring order. The cliques achieve an uneasy peace, Gary is expelled and institutionalized, and for the first time in years, Bullworth Academy begins functioning with a semblance of harmony.
