~ Butch to Martin Morning |
Butch is the main antagonist of the Martin Morning episode "The Lonesome Cowboy." He is a young Wild West bandit who seeks revenge on Martin Morning for supposedly putting him in prison in the past.
History[]
Prior to the events of the episode, Butch was supposedly put in prison by Martin Morning. However, this part of his history is merely a construct of Martin's transformation into a sheriff that morning. It is unknown whether Butch himself was brought into existence as part of Martin's transformation or if he already existed but was integrated into Martin's history as a side effect of said transformation.
Butch first appears in the episode when he rides his horse into town guns blazing. He comes across the old woman Miss Vinegar and shows her a poster of Sheriff Martin, asking her where he can be found. Vinegar answers that he can be found at the school. Butch tells Vinegar to tell Martin that "The Fastest Draw in the West" is looking for him if she sees him, before getting back on his horse and heading for the school to face Martin.
When he arrives at the schoolyard, Butch yells for Martin to come face him and fires off shots from his guns at the same time. As a result, he has his guns confiscated by vice-principal Mr. Grinsle and is made to attend Mrs. Busby's class, where he is assigned a seat next to Martin. Butch reminds Martin of how he was sent to prison for two months thanks to him and tells him he spent everyday in there dreaming of a showdown with him. Martin tries to tell him that he's not really responsible for Butch's time spent in prison as he's only a sheriff for one day, but Butch think's he's just trying to make an excuse to get out of facing him and challenges him to a showdown at high noon before leaving the classroom with a threatening gesture towards him.
Wandering around the school's hallways, Butch comes across Mr. Grinsle's office and finds a bunch of futuristic-looking toy guns the vice-principal has confiscated in a drawer. Thinking the toy guns to be the real deal and of a model he hasn't seen yet, Butch takes a pair of them with him.
Not wanting to face off against Butch, Martin has his friend Gromo and a new boy in his class named Frank go to deal with the outlaw in his place, but Butch ends up taking Gromo hostage to force Martin to come and face him, which Frank informs Martin about, making Martin decide to go and face off against Butch after all. Martin and Butch have a showdown where the latter ends up "shooting" Martin with one of the toy guns he took from Mr. Grinsle's office, but since the gun is a toy, Martin is unharmed, much to Butch's annoyance. Butch chases after Martin, intending to pummel him with his fists instead. Martin takes a boat to escape him, and Butch jumps into the water after him, and thinks he's drowning since he can't swim. Martin gets him out of the water and informs him that the water was only a foot deep, as evidenced by the fact that Martin hit his head on the bottom when he jumped in to "save" Butch. Butch asks Martin if he's going to be put back in prison, and Martin decides to let him go free on the condition that he goes to school from now on, much to his dismay. At school, Martin, Gromo, and their other friend Roxanne then wish Butch happy trails as he rides off on his horse at the end of the episode.
It is unknown what happened to Butch the next morning when Martin ceased to be a sheriff and transformed into something different. It is likely that he either ceased to exist altogether or had his memories of Martin's involvement in his life wiped and was returned to whatever life he led before Martin's transformation (depending on whether his existence was a construct of Martin's transformation into a sheriff or not).
Trivia[]
- Since Martin allows Butch to go free on the condition that he starts attending school, he could be considered a Karma Houdini in regards to his attempt to kill Martin and whatever crime(s) he committed that led him to be imprisoned for two months (assuming said crimes weren't just false memories constructed by Martin's transformation into a sheriff) and there being no indication that he gave up being a bandit even after he thought Martin saved his life (the possibility that he ceased either to exist or to be a bandit the next morning upon Martin's new transformation notwithstanding).
