Who cares? Only thing that matters is we’re…free?
~ Buzz Buzzard’s response to his accomplice being the only thing that mattered was that they were free, only for the police to show up and arrest both of them - his last lines in the film.

Buster Keith Buzzard, better known as Buzz Buzzard, is the main antagonist of the Woody Woodpecker franchise.

He is an anthropomorphic vulture who usually appears as a con artist who architects bizarre schemes in order to scam unsuspecting people (usually Woody) out of their money or food. He's Woody Woodpecker's archenemy and one of his most recurring foes alongside Wally Walrus and Miss Meany. In the film sequel, he is also an escaped convict who escaped prison along with his cellmate and accomplice Darren to find the gold of Obadiah said to be buried beneath his former camp. He is the false head cook and user-turned-arch rival of Zane.

He was originally voiced by the late Lionel Stander and later by the late Dallas McKennon. He was voiced by Mark Hamill in The New Woody Woodpecker Show, and is currently voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson, who also voiced Kamek in the Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Biography[]

Buzz Buzzard is the show's character with the most consistent portrayal, acting as a antagonist in all of his appearances. He was the first antagonist in the show to be portrayed as full blown villain and is in many ways a polar opposite to Woody, having being created by director Dick Lundy in an attempt to make Woody a more sympathetic character.

His visual design is the one which changed the most during the show's run, often going alongside his different portrayals. He originally appeared as very tall and imposing with his body fully covered in black feathers, with an unshaved beard on his lower beak.

Subsequent appearances dropped some of those features, making him slimmer and less imposing (though still taller than Woody) and losing the unshaved beard as well as his black feathers, which were changed into a more brown/red color. His new design from NWWS harkens back to his original design, with the full black feathers and tall, imposing stature.

Buzz has had many varied roles, including a Wild West outlaw, pirate, mugger and sometimes as a rival co-worker of Woody. His most recurring role is that of a burglar/con artist, often out to make easy money by selling fake or very bad products, forcing people to sign contracts with him, though he can also appeal to common theft. He is shown to have a very imaginative mind when it comes to swindling people, being the one antagonist in the show to not be portrayed as a dimwit.

New Woody Woodpecker Show[]

Here he once agan takes the reins as the main antagonist, standing ahead of Wally Walrus and Miss Meany in this role.

Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp[]

Buzz Buzzard returns as the main antagonist of the film.

He is first seen spying on Camp Woo Hoo and Hoo Rah, leaving behind a prison uniform, showing he escaped prison at some point beforehand. After finding the cabins, Buzz manages to bribe Zane, the director of Hoo Rahs, into being his “head” cook, only using him so he can plan to find the hidden gold of Obadiah said to be buried beneath Camp Woo Hoo. He also communicates via phone with his accomplice, which turns out to be his escaped cellmate named Darren, for gold mining materials and logistics to find the gold, and uses a delivery guy to order weapons so he can try to destroy the camp Woo Hoo side so they could blame Woody for it. After multiple failures, he interferes with the Wilderness Games, causing the Woo Hoos to lose some games, and gets in a fierce battle with Woody when finding out the Woo Hoos outsmarted him. He later attempts to murder Woody, only to be tied up and be exposed as impersonating a cook to Zane. While Buzz gets out of it, he looks for Obidiah’s gold, successfully finding a chest under the statue. Unaware that he was set up, Darren picks him up by helicopter, he asks Buzz to open the chest to see the gold. Getting excited, Buzz does so, only to find out its full of plain rocks. Due to Darren failing to put the helicopter in autopilot as he comes to see, and gets disappointed as Buzz tells him, "I thought you were flying!" before they get in a helicopter crash. In the credits, it turns out the helicopter crashed near a police station. Unconscious and confused, Buzz and Darren wake up, and when Darren asks where they were, Buzz responds saying he didn’t care, saying the only thing that mattered was that they were free, only to be shocked as several police cars show up parked waiting for them. After the police chief sees Buzz's wanted poster, he tries to play innocent, but his innocent smile turns into a defeated sad face as he realizes he and Darren will be sent back to prison and its game over for him.

Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp (2024)[]

Trivia[]

  • Buzz Buzzard was based on Ben Buzzard, a character from Donald Duck's short The Flying Jalopy.
  • Buzz Buzzard is Woody's adversary who loses the most, rarely if ever getting the last laugh. He is portrayed as Woody's most despicable adversary, which was the director's attempt to portray Woody as a more sympathetic character.
  • It is lightly implied that Buzz Buzzard murdered Camp Hoo Rah’s cook so he could take his place in Woody Woodpecker goes to Camp offscreen.
  • In the Brazilian localization of the cartoons, Buzz Buzzard is named Zeca Urubu, with "Urubu" meaning "vulture" in Portuguese, and "Zeca" being a common Brazilian name, typically as a nickname for "José Carlos".
    • In Brazil, Buzz also served as the namesake of a type of flat top buzz haircut, nicknamed the "Zeca Urubu cut", due to its similarity to the haircut sported by the character on the 1954 short Real Gone Woody.
    • He and Woody Woodpecker are foils to Sheriff Woody Pride and Buzz Lightyear.
  • Both main characters have a rivalry, when the secondary character’s personality has more population than the main character.
  • Woody Woodpecker and Buzz Buzzard had no friendship qualities throughout the franchise. Except that, Woody and Buzz became allies at the climax of the first film.
  • Buzz Buzzard has died in at least two episodes, Wild and Woody and Buccaneer Woodpecker - in both episodes, he gets blown up with dynamite and becomes a ghost. Not to mention another apparent death (though without any ghost right after) in Scalp Treatment, in which he flies erratically while holding a speedboat propeller and explodes in a crash against a distant mountain.
  • The only episode where Buzz never acts as an antagonist is Alley To Bal, which he co-protagonizes with Woody.
  • Buzz appears in the 2018 Woody Woodpecker YouTube series and has a girlfriend named Veronica Buzzard, voiced by Tara Strong.
  • It is unknown how Buzz escaped prison with his accomplice in the film since it happened offscreen before the film started, but it could be implied he escaped by underground tunneling or used weapons he possibly made while in prison before or after meeting Darren. Darren wasn't seen until towards the end due to communicating with Buzz Buzzard on phone calls throughout the film, but it is known that Darren and Buzz met in prison when Buzz mentions to the caller "If you can't trust your cellmate when he gives you a stolen map, then who can you trust!?"
  • Buzz Buzzard is similar to The Grimes Brothers since they both have greed for richness, but the only difference is The Grimes Brothers want to directly kill Woody and sell him as a trophy where Buzz simply wants to go treasure hunting.
