Byun Ji-wan is a major antagonist of the 2007 South Korean movie Hansel and Gretel.

He was portrayed by Park Hee-Soon.

Biography[]

Byun, lost with his wife Kyeong-suk during a snowy day because they’re out of gas, meets with the protagonist Eun-Soo. He tells them to leave as soon as possible. Ji-wan tells him they'll take shelter in a local house instead. Eun-soo is surprised that they know about the isolated house. Then Man-bok appears. He makes them believe that Eun-Soo is his uncle.

In the house, they meet Man-bok’s little sisters, Young Hee and Jung Soon. The parents have left for several days. Eun-Soo later comes back to the house, to Ji-wan’s apparent relief because he thought he lost himself. The man presents himself as a deacon. He then begins to sing about God, but his wife stopped him because she didn't think it was the right time.

The next day, the pair eats with the children after Ji-wan makes them pray. Young Hee asks Ji-wan’s wife to teach her to eat. She refuses under the pretext she is old enough. But Young Hee insists and the woman, infuriated, squeezes the little girl's hands to force her to stop. The two siblings rise in protest and the woman mocks them, saying they were too spoiled. Ji-wan defuses the situation, saying it is nothing, and they continue to eat.

Another day, Young Hee throws a snowball on Ji-wan. Not taking offence, he asks where Eun-Soo is and after, he pretends to notice a spot on the girl’s ear and starts rubbing it. Kyeong-suk later accuses the children to have stolen her ring. They deny it. An infuriated Kyeong-suk strongly pulls Jung Soon’s necklaces to make them talk. Ji-wan tries to calm her, but she sends him outside the house. He sits on the swing and thinks. Kyeong-suk meets him and tells Man-bok dropped the light on her and telekinetically strangled her. She claims the house is cursed and wants to leave as soon as possible. Ji-wan brushes it off and says he had a revelation.

Months pass and one day, Kyeong-suk goes missing. Ji-wan searches for her, without finding her. He asks Eun-Soo for help and together, they go where the protagonist saw her for the last time. They find instead a stuffed rabbit. Ji-wan, at first believing to be a joke, but finds some jewelries held by the cuddle. This gives him the idea of transforming the house into a kind of church. Eun-Soo tries to reason with him and suggests they find a way to escape, but Ji-wan grabs him by the collar, orders him not to be on first-name terms, and assures him that if the children turn out to be little demons, he'll take it upon himself to send them back to hell. Eun-Soo is horrified. Ji-wan hits him and warns that he will show no mercy to those who stand up to God.

The evening arrives and the deacon is playing with the children. He praises the parents for having built a house in the middle of a forest and then asks if they have left some money for them. Young-Hee says they’ve not. Ji-wan does not mind and tells he will take of them from nom. Eun-Soo enters in the playroom, warns the kids to not trust him, and asks where their parents and Kyeong-suk are. Ji-wan calls Eun-Soo out for suspecting them of such a thing and continues to distract them with some magic tricks.

The night comes and Ji-wan is watching them while praying to God he will accomplish his will. He then takes a knife hidden in his Bible filled with pictures of children and puts it on Jung-Soon’s throat, threatening to kill her if he doesn’t have the deed of ownership of the house. When Man-bok pleads for his sister’s life, Ji-wan taunts about how he is scared and asks what the parents became. He then confesses to killing his own father because he annoyed him. Having a little box and believing the deeds are into it, he opens it. Man-bok uses his psychic abilities to hit the man with a wooden plank from the ceiling.

Jan-wi gets up, grabs Man-bok, and accusing him of being Satan and claiming to be freeing the Lord's house from evil influences, and wounds him on the back with his knife. An enraged Man-bok psychically strangles him, causing Ji-wan to fall to the ground.

Regaining consciousness, He puts his knife udner Eun-Soo’s throat and tries one last time to reassure the children about how he will care for them. He also claims Eun-Soo is an evil man and that he corrupted them. The children don’t believe him and begins to levitate all the objects in the piece. Ji-wan decides he is done with them and tries to kill the children, only for Man-bok to telepathically slit down his throat and kill him.

Later, a piece of newspaper reveals Ji-wan is a cult leader and serial killer of children who is chased by the authorities.

Personality[]

At first, Byun is a calm, polite, and religious man who seems to have the best interest of the children at heart. He especially contrasts with his wife Kyeong-suk who is capricious, strict, and abusive with them. He displays in this sense a charisma, able to convince the children of his kind and goodhearted nature.

However, this couldn't be further from the truth. Ji-wan is in fact a fanatical, sadistic, and psychopathic cult leader and a serial killer of children. He loves to terrorize and kill children, smiling when he he is making death threats to the three siblings.
