In his early life, he killed his brother Abel and was cursed to walk the Earth for all of eternity by bearing the "Mark of Cain". He eventually came across a dying woman named Lilith and found himself with a need to feed upon her. He drank her blood, confused as to how she knew his name, but had an instinctual knowledge of how to feed without actually killing her, leaving her alive enough to rise again, which she did as his bride, Lilith, Mother of Monsters. Together, they turned hundreds of humans into their vampiric "children".
He would become the servant of Dream and host of the House of Mystery.
