Naoko Yamamoto, better known as Calamity Mary, is a major antagonist in the anime and manga Magical Girl Raising Project.
In the anime, she was voiced by Kikuko Inoue in Japanese and Mikaela Krantz in English.
Biography[]
After being fired from her job, Naoko turned to drinking and grew nihilistic. While her husband was away at work, she used her young daughter as a "Guinea pig", abusing her for sadistic amusement. Her husband eventually found out and left her with their daughter in his custody. That night, Naoko obtained an update from her smartphone app Magical Girl Raising Project, where Fav revealed his intention to turn Naoko into a magical girl. Naoko dismisses these remarks, but gains Fav's interest when he tells her that by becoming a magical girl, Naoko can become stronger than everyone else and break all who she sees as weaker than her. Naoko laughed sadistically and gladly took the position of the magical girl, Calamity Mary.
As the magical girl Calamity Mary, Naoko was tasked with tutoring other magical girls that later joined the game, including Magicaloid 44, Top Speed, Ruler, and Numerin. While training them, Mary acted hostile and threatened to shoot them for every error they made she disliked, making her feared by the magical girls, especially Ruler. Ripple was intended to be her next tutor, but Top Speed volunteered at the last minute. Mary disliked this change and shot at them, but Ripple blocked her bullets. While the other magical girls of the city chose to aid other people, Mary chose to assist the criminal underground and served as a mercenary.
During the game, Magicaloid 44 chooses to partner up with Mary, as she was the safest spot, although Mary warns her with a bullet to the head should she ever betray her. While serving Mary, Magicaloid 44 was forced by Mary to profit off her ability to obtain a daily item from the future, which she bribed to Sister Nana. After Fav brings in the magical items, Mary buys the fourth-dimensional bag that holds an endless amount of anything in exchange for ten years of her life and uses it to store her weapons. Mary tells Magicaloid 44 that if she wants to prove herself as a trustworthy henchman, she will have to take the life of another magical girl. Magicaloid 44 chooses to kill Hardgore Alice and decapitates her. Before she could kill a nearby Snow White too for witnessing the event, Alice reveals her ability to survive every wound and impales Magicaloid 44 in the chest, killing her.
Upon hearing of Magicaloid 44's death, Mary orders Fav to give her Alice's location, finding her at a dock. Despite being shot multiple times by Mary's weapons, Alice is able to resist being killed. Even when she was reduced to a puddle of sludge, Mary attempts multiple actions to stop her from reforming, such as pouring acid on her and gasoline before setting it on fire. Mary then places what's left of Alice into a barrel before filling it up with cement and kicking it into the ocean. Upon hearing Fav's announcement that Magicaloid 44 was the only death of the week, Mary was furious as it meant her attempt to kill Alice failed. After relieving her anger by shooting her wine bottles and laughing maniacally, she decided to ignore Alice for now.
Later, Sister Nana attempts to goad the remaining magical girls to stop fighting. She and Weiss Winterprison confront Mary on a rooftop, and order Mary to stop using her magic to commit crimes, but Mary refuses and attacks them. Winterprison uses her ability to summon walls of stone for her and Nana to escape. The next night, Ripple and Top Speed are called to the top of a hotel by Mary. Upon arriving, Mary snipes at them, forcing them to take shelter behind the buildings and retreat. Mary decides to force them to come back by aiming her sniper rifle at a busy highway, shooting multiple cars and pedestrians without any remorse. Enraged, Ripple forces Top Speed to turn around and let her confront Mary.
As Top Speed and the other magical girls rescue the trapped survivors on the burning highway, Ripple battles against Mary. During their clash, Mary taunts Ripple that she will cause more carnage to the city once she defeats her. Eventually, Ripple steps on a landmine that Mary disguised as a roofing tile and throws grenades at her to force her into jumping off and cause it to detonate. Fortunately, Top Speed arrives in time to save Ripple. Coming up with a plan on how to defeat Mary, Ripple has Top Speed goad Mary into shooting at Top Speed's broom.
Upon being shot down the second time from their "face-on" charge, Ripple and Top Speed emerge again, this time holding a glass panel and trick Mary into shooting it above her. This causes multiple shards to rain down on Mary, forcing her to ditch her big gun for a pistol. While Mary was distracted at shooting the shards, she fails to notice in time Ripple tossing multiple shurikens at her. One of which strikes Calamity Mary straight in the forehead, killing her instantly.
Following Mary's death, Nemurin creates a much friendlier clone of Calamity Mary within the Dream World to help train Masked Wonder.
Appearance[]
As Naoko Yamamoto, she is a mid-aged woman with messy brown hair, and wears a purple shirt with black patterns and a long brown skirt. As Calamity Mary, she has long blonde hair, yellow eyes, and a beauty mark located underneath her left eye. She wears minimal clothing, consisting of a small cowboy hat, silver earrings, black ribbons around her neck, a brown top with black and white trims around the edges, brown sleeves, a brown skirt with a black belt, and black boots, with a holster on her left boot.
Personality[]
Calamity Mary is a sadistic individual who wants to be seen as fearful to others, experiencing mental breakdowns when felt humiliated or testified. When not busy, she is seen toying with her guns or frequently drinking.
The only person who she appears to tolerate is Magicaloid 44 as she was respectful enough to avenge her by attempting to kill Hardgore Alice. But this relationship is questionable as she did not seem bothered while pointing a gun at her and threatening to kill her the instant she betrayed her.
Powers and Abilities[]
Calamity Mary's primary ability is to increase the capabilities of any weapon she wields. Any knife, gun, grenade, or any other weapon to come into her possession is permanently enhanced of their power. This also includes other attributes such as the weapons' range and firing rate.
After obtaining the fourth-dimensional bag by selling ten years of her lifespan, Mary uses it as storage for her arsenal. It allows her to quickly swap between weapons even in combat.
