~ Caleb before he attacks Nellie Kane. |
Caleb Meyer is the main antagonist of Gillian Welch's song of the same name. He is a hillbilly who lives near the narrator Nellie Kane and at first appears to be harmless, but is ultimately revealed as a brutish pervert when he attempts to force himself on Nellie while her husband is away.
Biography[]
Caleb Meyer is a hillbilly who lives all alone in the "hollarin' pines", where he passes the time by making whiskey. One evening, while Nellie Kane's husband is away on business, Caleb goes round to her house and calls for her. When she comes out, he asks where her husband is, and she confirms that he's away.
Upon hearing this, Caleb throws down his whiskey before grabbing her by the hair, throwing her down on the bed and lying on top of her. During the assault, Nellie feels around for a weapon, and finds Caleb's now-shattered whiskey bottle, which she uses to bloodily slash his throat, killing him.
