Truth or Dare?
~ Calux's catchphrase while possessing people.
You can't. Carter was the only one who could stop this. So now the game won't end until all the players are dead, and your turn's next. Unless you find some new friends to play with. But that's not gonna happen, is it?
~ Calux taunts Olivia by revealing the truth or dare wouldn't stop unless more people join the game.

Calux (pronunciation: kay-lix) is the main antagonist of the 2018 horror movie Truth or Dare. He is a sadistic demon who controls the cursed Truth or Dare game and promotes chaos by forcing people to participate in it. When it is one's turn, Calux possesses that person and they have hallucinations about someone else asking them "truth or dare?" and then proceeding to tell what the person has to confess or do. If the person refuses, Calux makes them kill themselves by whatever means available. Calux apparently does not have a physical form, but his distorted evil smirk is clearly visible in the people he uses to talk through the hallucinations.

He was voiced by Joe Ochman.

Biography[]

Origins[]

Calux is an ancient demon whose first known invocation was by Inez Reyes, a nun from Tijuana, Mexico who wanted to get rid of the sadistic priest on the church who forced the nuns to play Truth or Dare. However, the demon did not help and made the game keep going until all her friends were dead. In order to stop him, she made another ritual in which she cut her tongue off and trapped Calux inside a sealed pot.

In the present day (decades later), a young man named Sam got drunk while playing Truth or Dare with his friends at the now abandoned church and began trashing the place, breaking the pot in the process and releasing Calux. When the group went home, all of them ended up dying except for Sam and a woman named Giselle Hammond. In order to not be killed, Sam had no choice but to delay his turn by making more people play the game, thus increasing the number of Calux's victims. Giselle also continued playing the game and she is seen in the very first scene of the movie lighting a woman on fire to complete a dare.

Truth or Dare[]

Using the fake name Carter, Sam convinces vacationing vlogger Olivia Barron and her friends Markie, Lucas, Penelope, Tyson, and Brad to play Truth or Dare while drinking at the abandoned church. They reveal several compromising secrets to each other. Afterwards, Calux's hallucinations continue appearing to the characters in several instances, in which they are forced to confess secrets or complete dangerous challenges. In the following order, they were:

  • Truth: Olivia publicly shouts about Markie's infidelity to Lucas (her boyfriend);
  • Dare: Ronnie has to kill himself after failing to complete a dare;
  • Truth: Lucas admits that he has always had feelings for Olivia;
  • Dare: Markie breaks Olivia's hand;
  • Truth: Brad admits to his father that he is gay;
  • Truth: Tyson kills himself after refusing to confess that he forges drug prescriptions during an admissions interview;
  • Dare: A drunk Penelope is forced to walk along the eaves of a house (but her death is prevented by a collective effort of the group).

The group eventually learns about Giselle and go meet her. Giselle tells them about Sam (who they still think is a different person from Carter) and how they started playing the game. Giselle then reveals she was dared to kill Olivia and shoots her, but Olivia is saved by Penelope, who dives in front of her and is killed instead. Falling in her dare, Giselle shoots herself dead. Afterwards, the game continues:

  • Dare: Olivia has sex with Lucas;
  • Truth: Lucas admits that he is still in love with Markie and not Olivia;
  • Truth: All alone, Markie reveals that she keeps her father's gun and thinks about suicide.

At this point, Olivia and Lucas travel to Tijuana and meet Inez Reyes, who reveals them everything about Calux and the origin of the game. She communicates that the tongue ritual must be repeated with the last person who released the demon (Sam) for it to be sealed again.

  • Dare: Brad steals his police officer father's gun and tries to make him beg for his life, but is shot by another officer while doing it;
  • Dare: Olivia tells Markie her darkest secret: that Markie's father, who had killed himself, had sexually assaulted Olivia in the same night he did so.

The group then goes meet Sam, whom Olivia had found out to be the same person as Carter and who had isolated himself from the world to avoid being called on to the game again. They force Sam at gunpoint to go to the church. They try to perform the ritual, but Calux prevents them by calling Lucas:

  • Dare: Lucas is forced to kill either Olivia or Markie, which he refuses, so Calux possesses him and makes him kill Sam and then himself

As Markie's turn comes next, Olivia tells her to choose dare and then refuse. She accepts.

  • Dare: Markie is forced to kill Olivia, which she refuses.

As Calux possesses Markie, Olivia promptly calls the demon to the game, as anyone can be part of it, before he can kill Markie:

  • Truth: Calux is forced by Olivia to tell if there is a way for her and Markie to make it out of the game alive. Calux says the only way is by recruiting more people to the game.

After that, Olivia makes a video for YouTube in which she tells what happened to her and her friends, explains the game's rules and calls anyone who's watching: "Truth or Dare?".
