Camazotz is the Mayan god of bats, night, death and sacrifice. Camazotz even means death bat in the K'iche' language. Camazotz is also one of the four animal demons responsible for wiping out mankind during the age of the first sun.
Biography[]
In the Popol Vuh, Camazotz is a giant bat monster encountered by Hunahpu and Xbalanque during their trials in the underworld of Xibalba.
They both had to spend a night in the house of bats, and to do so without being killed, they hid themselves inside their own blowguns.
Hunahpu stuck his head out to see if the sun had risen, and Camazotz then ripped off his head. While Xbalanque made a replacement for his twin, the death gods still got to keep Hunahpu's head and planned on using it for the next day's ballgame.
That day, the twins were able to surreptitiously substitute a squash or a gourd for the ball, retrieving Hunahpu's real head and resulting in an embarrassing defeat for the Xibalbans.
