~ Verna to Camille regarding her choice of work and evil self.

Camille L'Espanaye is a supporting antagonist in the 2023 gothic horror series The Fall of the House of Usher.

She is the illegitimate and second-youngest of Roderick Usher who exploited her two young assistants for sexual gain. She was deeply covetous of her elder half-sister, Victorine LaFourcade.

She is portrayed by Kate Siegel, who also portrayed Viola Lloyd in The Haunting of Bly Manor.

Personality[]

Camille is a vain, narcissistic woman with a fierce temper. She has a proclivity to disparage her assistants and uses others for her own personal gain. She is deeply envious of her elder half-sister, and is shown to be less tactful than her. She takes pleasure and comedic delight in those she disparages.

Biography[]

Background[]

On New Year's Eve 1980, Camille's father and aunt, Madeline Usher, made a deal with Verna guaranteeing them both unparalleled power and wealth. However, the deal was subject to the condition that any bloodline created by Roderick or Madeline would die early, but also share in their power. Despite this, due to Verna's suspiciousness, Madeline and Roderick struggle to believe their deal was legitimate, and ignore it.

Some years later, Roderick met another woman who gave birth to Camille, their daughter. Camille later became head of Fortunado Pharmaceuticals' PR, the business that centres the Usher Family's fortune. She also ended up hiring Beth (whom she calls Tina) and Toby as her assistants, which developed into an exploitative sexual dynamic.

The Fall of the House of Usher[]

Hell-bent on her hate-fuelled plan to sabotage her half-sister Victorine, Camille breaks into her sister's lab. There, she is confronted by Verna who poses as a security nightguard. Camille dismisses the guard and continues to search around, where she discovers that Victorine's tests have been unsuccessful.

Camille films evidence of sister's abuse of the chimpanzees used in trials. Verna confronts her once again, where she asks Camille why she has so much hate and envy for Victorine. Camille threatens to have Verna fired, but Verna ignores this and tells Camille the reason for her envy is due to Victorine's intelligence. Victorine is more able to disguise her true, dark nature, whereas Camille wears it on her sleeve which has made her lonely and unable to produce something of her own. Verna then takes the form of a chimpanzee and mauls her to death.

Camille's death is treated as an accident and blamed on the chimpanzees. Roderick becomes tormented by the death of Camille and his other illegitimate children, and sees their bloodied corpses in a nightmare, including Camille.

Trivia[]

  • Camille is the only Usher child who is physically fought in combat by Verna.
    • Arguably, Lenore is physically killed by Verna as she dies when she is touched by Verna, but this is done with guilt as Lenore had not acted with the same entitlement and darkness the direct descendants of Roderick had.
  • Camille's namesake and focal episode title are taken from Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Murders in the Rue Morgue.
