Biography[]

In France, Camille is the hypochondriac son of Madame Raquin, the aunt of Thérèse Raquin. Camille grew up with Thérèse who was his cousin. Madame Raquin constantly spoils Camille, making him spoiled and selfish. As adults, Madame Raquin had Camille marry Thérèse. Thérèse, however, did not love Camille. The three family members move to Paris so Camille can find a job. Camille eventually begins working for a railway company and meets his childhood friend, Laurent LeClaire. Camille brings Laurent home to meet Madame Raquin, Thérèse, and to participate in the weekly dominoes game. Thérèse and Laurent fall in love and meet secretly in her bedroom without Camille or Madame Raquin from finding out.

Thérèse and Laurent eventually deicide to kill Camille so they can get married and be together permanently as they feel Camille is their only obstacle. While in the park, Camille, Thérèse, and Laurent rent a rowboat and row down the river in the park. Laurent then attacks Camille, prompting Camille to bite his neck in self-defense. Laurent then throws Camille into the river, drowning and killing him. Laurent later goes to the morgue to identify Camille's corpse. Thérèse and Laurent eventually marry, but begin to feel guilty for killing Camille. Soon after marrying, they start to have nightmares and hallucinations of the ghost of Camille, which prevent them from living happily as the two grow distant and Laurent quits painting. As this is going on, Madame Raquin eventually has a stroke, leaving her mute and paralyzed everywhere except for her eyes. One day, Thérèse and Laurent mention that killed Camille in front of Madame Raquin, which prompts her to try to inform her friends at a dominoes game that Thérèse and Laurent killed Camille by tracing the sentence on the table, which she fails. Unable to live with the memory of the murder, Thérèse and Laurent poison themselves in front of Madame Raquin, avenging Camille's death and murder.
