"The universe...is MINE!"

The Campaigner, also known as The Hooded One in the comics, is the secondary antagonist of the Turok franchise.

He is an evil, tyrannical, power-hungry and relentless cyborg warlord with powerful weapons at his disposal who amasses an army that he unleashes upon the Lost Land. His goal is to obtain all the Chronoscepter's pieces together and use an amplifier located at the pinnacle of his fortress which he intends to use to destroy the barrier between our universe and The Lost Land, thus controlling both universes. Tal'Set is then called to stop the Campaigner and save the universe and the Lost Land.

After his defeat, Tal'set would destroy the chronoscepter by tossing it into a volcano so no one else can use it for their evil deeds although this would then awaken a primordial being known as the Primagen.

Appearance[]

The Campaigner has a big, fearsome structure with lots of mass bulked in by the mechanical exoskeleton armor that increases his scale and power. Many designs have been seen where he has a cybernetic body that is highly augmented, mixing both technological and biological elements, which makes him part man, part machine. His armor takes up a dark, metallic, battle-worn look to give him a menacing militaristic appearance. One will also commonly come across glowing elements, especially on his armor and weapons, as characteristic of this character design for signaling access to advanced technology and energy-based armament. Either the exoskeleton conceals his face, or it is withered and grotesquely scarred-the only face a man could have after many years in the crucible of combat and technological enhancement.

Personality[]

The most characteristic feature of the Campaigner's personality is his very strong desire for power. He seeks to get the Chronoscepter, a very powerful ancient weapon able even to manipulate time and space. The ambition to wield such a god-like artifact suggests, indeed, that the Campaigner does not simply want to dominate the physical world but wants to be a god-like figure with absolute power over reality itself. This preoccupation with the Chronoscepter defines him, as his every action is guided by an obsession with it. His desire for this weapon is not simply practical; it is deeply personal, evidencing that the Campaigner considers himself worthy of this ultimate power. This megalomania represents a classical trait of tyrannical figures and thus cements him as nothing less than a common warlord but rather a villain with delusions of godhood.

The Campaigner does not show quarter in his pursuit of power. He does not balk at mass atrocities, enslaving whole populaces, and destroying civilizations in his aim to move his cause. His rule is one of terror and oppression where total loyalty is demanded from his minions-mostly likely forced into his servitude through fear or some form of mental manipulation. He is only destructive because he has no empathy; he truly cares nothing except for his ambitions and goals. He does not seem to work toward this power for ideological reasons or for some higher cause but wholly from the self-serving part of the desire to have dominance over others.

Despite relying on brute force and technology, the Campaigner is very much a man who thinks in strategy. Huge armies of soldiers, mutants, and beings augmented through technology he marshals with precision, moving them to attain his aims. He would probably possess vast knowledge of military strategy and ancient technology, turning the forces both of modern and archaic natures to his advantage. The Campaigner is manipulative to a high degree. He used alliances and betrayals alike, running the course from coercing to deceiving to outright intimidating others for his purposes. This makes him a formidable opponent, as he isn't just strong; he's smart.

As it often does, the lust for power that drives so many antagonists has thrown the Campaigner into a type of madness. He is paranoid, always thinking some plot or other is being woven against him, or some attempt to take the power that eludes him. His will to command extends not only to the world surrounding him but to his own underlings and allies, whom he distrusts and often commands with fear. This madness is also manifested in his willingness to fill his body with technology to the degree where he's barely recognizable as human. All of these augmentations that he relies on punctuate his principle that the end justifies the means, even if it comes at the cost of his humanity.

Biography[]

Games[]

In the earlier chapters of his life, the Campaigner was far more human than he would later become, embodying the spirit and resilience of a man rather than the cold, calculated precision of a machine. During this time, he undertook a bold and ambitious quest to seize control of the powerful artifact known as the Light Burden from Tal'Set, a formidable adversary who had long held dominion over its immense capabilities. The Campaigner fought valiantly and, at one point, came perilously close to achieving his goal, pushing the boundaries of his strength and determination. However, the tide of battle turned against him, and in a moment of brutal confrontation, a devastating blow was dealt that shattered not just his spirit but also his physical form. The severity of his injuries was catastrophic, leaving him on the brink of death and requiring extensive medical intervention for any chance of recovery. In the aftermath, the once-vibrant body of the Campaigner was irreparably damaged, leading to the necessity of advanced synthetic organs to sustain his life. Furthermore, his limbs, which had once been a testament to his humanity and prowess, were replaced with cutting-edge cybernetic prosthetics that transformed him into something beyond human. This harrowing transition marked a pivotal point in his life, blurring the lines between man and machine and setting him on a path he could never have anticipated.

After a considerable passage of time, the Campaigner discovered the existence of the Chronoscepter, a legendary relic renowned for its extraordinary ability to tear apart the very fabric of time and space itself. In a bid to harness this immense power for his own ambitions, he devised an elaborate and colossal focusing array atop the peak of his formidable fortress. This intricate mechanism was designed to amplify the Chronoscepter's capabilities to an unprecedented level, enabling him to breach the invisible barriers that kept the Lost Land isolated from the rest of the universe. However, the Chronoscepter was not whole; it had been deliberately shattered into eight distinct fragments millennia ago as a safeguard against its potential misuse by malevolent forces. Aware of the Campaigner's nefarious intentions to dominate the universe, Tal'Set made a solemn pledge to embark on a quest to locate the scattered pieces of the Chronoscepter. He understood that he must act swiftly and decisively to prevent the Campaigner from gathering the fragments and ultimately realizing his dark ambitions. Thus began a race against time, one filled with peril and uncertainty, as Tal'Set sought to retrieve the remnants of the Chronoscepter before they could fall into the wrong hands.

The Campaigner orchestrated an impressive and formidable military force with the primary objective of halting the relentless advance of the Turok. His army was not merely a collection of soldiers; it comprised a diverse array of combatants, including cyborgs, raptors, and a variety of human factions, each contributing their unique strengths and skills to his cause. In addition to these groups, the Campaigner was astute in his recruitment efforts, successfully enlisting specialized factions that bolstered his ranks. Among these were the Ancient Warriors, renowned for their legendary prowess and battle-hardened experience; the Pur-Lin, a group known for their unwavering loyalty and exceptional combat abilities; and the Alien Infantry, an extraterrestrial force equipped with advanced technology and weaponry. All of these groups willingly submitted to his command, recognizing the strength and vision of his leadership. With such a vast and powerful coalition united under his banner, the Campaigner effectively claimed dominion over the Lost Land, transforming it into a stronghold for his ambitious campaign against the Turok and solidifying his position as a formidable leader in this tumultuous landscape.

As the tyrant succumbed to his injuries, the cybernetic enhancements that had once granted him power began to fail, sputtering and sparking as the fortress itself began to collapse around them. With the Campaigner finally destroyed once and for all, Tal'Set stood amidst the ruins, victorious but aware that the battle had taken its toll. The echoes of the past reverberated through the crumbled walls, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Lost Land. His quest led him to the imposing fortress of the Campaigner, a menacing stronghold that loomed with an aura of dread. Within its fortified walls, Tal'Set faced a series of formidable challenges, battling through hordes of minions and navigating deadly traps set by the Campaigner to thwart any would-be heroes. The tension reached its peak when he confronted the Campaigner’s ferocious guardian, a colossal Tyrannosaurus rex named Thunder. In a fierce and brutal showdown, Tal'Set unleashed all of his combat prowess to vanquish the beast, proving his mettle and determination.

Comics[]

In the Lost Land of Galyanna, there existed a figure known as The Hollow One, a robot who took on the role of a Campaigner. This mechanical entity presided over a grand arena, where battles of strength and strategy unfolded before eager spectators. The Hollow One held a distinct belief regarding the nature of its fellow warriors and the Turok lineage. In its programmed reasoning, it perceived the line of Campaigners and the Turoks as two distinct yet intrinsically linked sides of the same coin. The Hollow One respected the Turoks, acknowledging that they were formidable adversaries, especially in physical combat, where their prowess often surpassed its own capabilities. However, despite this acknowledgment of their strength, The Hollow One firmly believed that the Turoks could never match its superior intellect and cunning. In its digital mind, it was inconceivable that these soulless fighting machines, regardless of their physical advantages, could ever hope to outsmart it in the arena’s strategic battles. The Hollow One's confidence in its own mental acuity set the stage for fierce confrontations, where brute force and sharp wits would clash in a struggle for dominance.

The Campaigner, perplexed by the clever wordplay and the absurdity of the scenario, was unable to decipher the riddle correctly. His misinterpretation led to his defeat in the challenge, resulting in the liberation of the captured villagers. With great relief, Tal'Set escorted the freed villagers back to their homes, ensuring their safety and restoring a sense of normalcy to their lives. This victory not only highlighted the importance of wit and strategy in overcoming seemingly insurmountable challenges but also solidified Joshua's place as a valuable ally in the ongoing battle against darkness.

But Tal'Set was not done yet. With the Campaigner's arm now discarded on the ground, the mighty Chronoscepter lay within Tal'Set's grasp. Seizing this opportunity, he grasped the powerful device, feeling its energies pulse through him like a storm. With a decisive motion, he unleashed the full might of the Chronoscepter, channeling its incredible forces to obliterate the Campaigner completely. The attack was not merely physical; it struck at the very fabric of existence itself, annihilating the Campaigner on both an atomic level and a temporal one. In that cataclysmic moment, it felt as though the Campaigner had never existed at all, as if time itself had erased every trace of his being from the universe. The echoes of their battle faded into silence, leaving behind only the remnants of what had once been a fierce confrontation between these two formidable foes. After an indeterminate period had passed, a fierce and climactic battle erupted between Tal'Set and the Campaigner, a confrontation that would ultimately lead to their mutual destruction. The Campaigner, who had cunningly acquired the powerful Chronoscepter, clung to it fiercely, refusing to part with the artifact despite the escalating intensity of their struggle. In a moment of sheer ferocity, Tal'Set swung his atomic ax with precision and strength, severing the Campaigner's arm. The impact of this blow was cataclysmic; the resulting explosion was so powerful that it obliterated the Campaigner's flesh-like exterior, leaving nothing but devastation in its wake.

Trivia[]

  • The Campaigner is voiced by David Dienstbier in both Dinosaur Hunter, and Rage Wars.
  • The Campaigner uses the same design of the Campaigner from Valiant Comics' Turok: Dinosaur Hunter comic series, which was designed by Tim Truman.
  • The Campaigner is one of the few final bosses in the original Turok series that are of human scale and not large creatures. It is stated that he would sometimes throw his enemies into a special-made arena where they encounter his pet cyborg Tyrannosaurus Rex named Thunder and are forced to either fight him or get eaten by him.
  • It is unclear if the Campaigner knows the history of the Lost Land due to him having very limited screen-time.
  • He can be considered the overarching antagonist of Turok 2: Seeds of Evil since his search for the chronoscepter and Tal'set destroying it resulted in the awakening of the Primagen.
