~ Mathius to Terrence Kyne, moments before being sedated |
Benjamin Mathius was the Captain of the USG Ishimura who spearheaded the ship's mission to retrieve Marker 3A for the Church of Unitology.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Benjamin Mathius was a high ranking Unitologist and ship captain employed by the Concordance Extraction Corporation who was entrusted with retrieving Marker 3A from Aegis VII and bringing it to the Church. To carry out his mission, the Church of Unitology used its vast influence within the CEC to have Mathius posted on the USG Ishimura in its last cycle of duty as its captain. In other words, he seemed to have tricked the Earth Government that they were bringing the Marker to Earth so that a cure would be created against the Marker's influences and, worse than that, the Necromorph outbreak.
Dead Space Comic[]
During his mission, Mathius contacts the Aegis VII colony manager Hanford Carthusia via video call with an assignment on protecting the Marker at all costs until the Ishimura arrives to retrieve it. He also assigns Carthusia that the bodies of the Union Square crowd lead by VTM Engineer 1st Class and Unitologist Deakin Abbott (who committed a mass suicide due to the Marker's influences) are frozen so they can be "in top condition" when the Ishimura arrives.
Dead Space: Downfall[]
Once the Marker is retrieved from Aegis VII, Mathius's chief of security aboard the Ishimura, Alissa Vincent, asks the captain what they should do with it next. Eventually, Mathius gives Vincent a new assignment on running a full analysis of the Marker after his chief medical officer, Dr. Terrence Kyne, is finished studying it.
Meanwhile, the Aegis VII colonists have already begun to succumb to the mind-twisting effects of the Marker. As the planet-crack commences and the Marker is brought aboard the ship, wholesale slaughter takes place across the colony and Captain Mathius orders that the colony be quarantined in order to prevent the affliction affecting the colonists from reaching the ship. These efforts are in vain as a shuttle piloted by Foreman Colin Barrow crashes into the Ishimura's hangar bay, bringing the Necromorph pathogen with it.
As the infection begins to spread throughout the Ishimura, Mathius takes a hardline stance on preventing any further interaction with the colony, as he does not want whatever is causing it to spread to the ship as he feared it would hinder his mission to retrieve the Marker. Despite Dr. Terrence Kyne's suggestion that the Marker is responsible for the violence overtaking the ship, the captain remains determined to carry out the will of the Church of Unitology to bring the Marker back to Earth, even if it means sacrificing the colony. Additionally, he blocks all outgoing communications to keep his employees from contacting the colony. When confronted by Kyne over the Marker’s potential influence over the colonists’ behavior, Mathius reassures the doctor that the risk is worth it. Vincent catches the captain's words of doubt and proceeds to accuse Mathius of sacrificing the colony and the ship's crew. Nevertheless, Mathius orders Vincent to take her team with her and kill anyone onboard his vessel infected by the Marker.
As the events progress, the Ishimura's Chief Communications Officer attempts to call the Earth Government for help, but Mathius disables the ship's communications array to prevent any further contacts to Earth or the Aegis VII colony that could jeopardize his mission. Kyne confronts Mathius again and demands he brings all the ship's communications back online. However, Mathius refuses and instead reveals his true intentions on bringing the Marker to the Church back on Earth in time for the Convergence Event once it's presented to the public. Angered by the captain's true intentions, Kyne calls Mathius a Unitologist and uses his mission as a violation of Maritime Law Article 5469 to strip him of his duty. As Mathius is being arrested by his first and second officers, D. White and J. Chic, Kyne prepares to administer a sedative to the captain, but Mathius physically refuses to resign from captaining the Ishimura and tries to strangle him to death while the Marker completely takes over his mind. With one last ounce of strength left in him, Kyne attempts to reach for Mathius' neck which he would sedate him by, but a struggle between the captain and his CMO causes him to accidentally jab the doctor's syringe towards one of Mathius's eyes, killing him instantly. With Mathius dead, White becomes the Ishimura's acting captain whose first order is to bring Mathius's corpse into the ship's morgue.
After returning to Mathius's bridge with engineering specialist Samuel Irons (who managed to disperse a crowd of Unitologists from CEC business earlier), Vincent confirms Kyne accidentally killing Mathius as an act of self-defense, reminding White that the captain deserved the consequences of sacrificing so many innocent lives because of the Marker.
Dead Space (2008)/Dead Space (Remake)[]
Not long after the Necromorphs take over the Ishimura without any more humans left, CEC engineer Isaac Clarke arrives at the morgue where the dead Mathius is kept for incarceration to retrieve his RIG when an Infector descends upon the captain's dead corpse and transforms Mathius into a Slasher, which Clarke manages to eliminate before finally taking his RIG.
