Captain Nathaniel Flint is the overarching antagonist of Disney's 43rd animated feature-length film Treasure Planet, an adaptation of the late Robert Louis Stevenson's 1882 adventure novel Treasure Island.

He was the most fearsome and legendary pirate captain of the galaxy who became famous for pillaging several starships for their treasures and getting away without leaving a trace with the largest loot ever. Even after dying, Flint would go on to hide his loot in his own planet, which became known as the titular Treasure Planet. He is based on the eponymous character from the original book.

He was voiced by Peter Cullen, who is best known for voicing Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise, and provided the creature sound effects as the eponymous Predator.

Past[]

Years ago before the events of the film, Captain Nathaniel Flint became known as one of the most ruthless and infamous pirates known across the galaxy. Renowned for his immense greed, Flint sailed the galaxy aboard his starship and pillaged every other ship he could find, sending his crewmembers to board the other ships, assault/kill its passengers, steal all their goods and then leave them to their fates, like one occasion in which he attacked an armada ship and left it in flames. Among his most loyal crewmembers were his first mate Billy Bones and the droid B.E.N. In order to increase and protect his treasure, Flint would go on to use as headquarters a mechanical planet of his own that would become known as Treasure Planet. Inside the planet's bowels, Flint hid his loot while using a portal to access different worlds or systems for his operations.

Eventually, however, Flint decided to hide his treasure from everyone and ensure no one other than him would ever get to enjoy it. Presumably ridding himself from his crew, Flint stayed on Treasure Planet with B.E.N. and entrusted Bones with the only map with the coordinates to the planet. To ensure B.E.N. didn't spill the beans in case he came across someone, Flint stripped B.E.N. from his memory ship, ripping it off his head and keeping it on his hand while leaving B.E.N. as a crazy isolated android. As a last resort, Flint rigged Treasure Planet's core with a booby trap to initiate the planet's self-destruction if someone ever entered its interior. Now ready, Flint apparently sat on his ship until he somehow died, but legends about his loot became well-known.

Treasure Planet[]

Years later, the three sailors Jim Hawkins, Dr. Delbert Doppler and Captain Amelia, the former two deeply interested in finding the treasure after investigating so much about Flint, start an expedition to find Flint's treasure after Bones entrusts the map to Jim, but John Silver and his pirates lead a mutiny against them due to being after it for so long, setting into motion the events of the film.

Eventually, once they arrive to Treasure Planet, Jim comes across B.E.N. and they all find the portal to Treasure Planet's bowels, where Silver and his crew claim the loot, but Jim finds B.E.N.'s memory chip and restores his memories just in time to learn about the booby trap, that starts the destruction of Treasure Planet, leading Jim to try to unsuccessfully steal Flint's ship for the sake of paying a new inn for his mother Sarah during the film's climax. In the end, despite having the same option however, Silver decides to not be as greedy as Flint was and saves Jim at the cost of losing Flint's ship with its treasure forever.

Treasure Planet's subsequent destruction ultimately claims all of Flint's treasure, but Silver reveals himself to have kept a few jewels and coins, which he gives to Jim so he and his mother can recover their income while B.E.N. gets to stay with him.

It's unknown why Captain Flint's corpse was aboard his ship, but it's possible that he fought to the death to defend his treasure and got killed or was so obsessed with it that he opted to stay there and died from starvation and dehydration.
Captain Flint serves as a dark parallel to John Silver. Both characters are greedy treasure hunting pirates after as much loot as possible. Over the course of the film, Silver openly avoids unnecessary cruelty and forms a genuine father-son bond with Jim Hawkins and learns the error of his ways, to the point of choosing to save the boy over the treasure he had always wanted, while Flint allows his greed to consume him to the point of doing whatever he can to ensure no one finds his loot and seemingly never learns the error of his ways. Flint serves as an example of what Silver might've become if he had never met Jim Hawkins and allowed himself to become fully consumed by his greed.
