Biography[]
Jonas Cutter was once a galley slave who eventually led a mutiny that was said to have been the bloodiest one in maritime history. He eventually became a pirate captain and adopted the name Cutter due to his love of using his blades to cut flesh. Several pirates turned against him since he murdered countless people to obtain his vast collection of treasure. One of them, Ian Keegan, forged a dagger powered by the souls of Cutter's victims. He prepared confront Cutter, only for the pirate to surprise and ultimately kill him. However, before he died, Ian placed a curse on Cutter that his treasure would never grant his soul peace. Ian's spyglass was also enchanted, and both it and the dagger were hidden in a treasure chest that could only be opened by a "champion" who would one day battle against Cutter.
Around 200 years later, Russell "Rush" Keegan, one of Ian's descendants, opened the chest, which had been placed in a magic shop. He took the spyglass home to his younger brother, Max, which also resulted in Cutter's spirit being awakened. While it originally appeared to be an ordinary object, Max saw that it started moving by itself. Eventually, Cutter and his henchman, Mr. Noise, placed Max in a trance, which had him leave his house and walk towards the water. When Rush came to retrieve his brother, the spirit of Mr. Noise revealed himself and chased them back into their house. Cutter himself then entered the house and had his henchman apprehend Rush before having the still-hypnotized Max come to him. After abducting Max, Cutter and Mr. Noise began to sail away before disappearing into the fog.
Rush confronted Sardo, the owner of the magic shop, who told him to meet with Dr. Vink at a barbershop. Dr. Vink described Cutter's backstory and explained that Rush had to battle the pirate himself. Ian's spirit assisted him in finding the path to Cutter's treasure. As he was searching for it, Cutter's disembodied voice repeatedly taunted him. Eventually, he found what appeared to be Max, only for it to turn out to be Mr. Noise in disguise. He attempted to kill Rush, who ended up using the dagger to banish his spirit.
Soon, he found Cutter's treasure room, as well as the real Max, who was trapped in a cage. Before Rush could free his brother, Cutter confronted him and expressed his desire to battle him after waiting two centuries, ignoring the fact that Rush had no desire to fight. He initially intended to battle his opponent in a sword fight, but upon seeing that Rush didn't have his own sword, Cutter gleefully attempted to kill him while he was defenseless. He was able to escape from Cutter and was reminded by Dr. Vink to use the dagger on the former pirate captain. Before he could do so, however, Cutter tossed it out of his hand. He voiced how disappointed he was in this battle and prepared to kill his enemy, only for Max to escape his cage and confront him. In response, Cutter prepared to kill them both. Before he could harm either of them, Rush used the dagger's power to blast him into his chair and tie him to it. Dr. Vink then approached both of the kids and explained that Rush had to run him through with the dagger while he was incapacitated.
Cutter taunted him, declaring that he'd come after him after killing Max. He also began to insist that his enemy finish him with the dagger. Seeing how enthusiastic Cutter was about having the dagger used on him, the others realized that since his spirit was stuck guarding his treasure from people who would never come for it, he wanted the dagger to be used on him in one final battle so that his spirit could be released. Rush responded to Cutter’s insistence on using the dagger by destroying it, causing the crypt to start caving him. Rush, Max, and Dr. Vink were able to escape in time, while Cutter's spirit was sealed away.
