Captain Marquet is the secondary antagonist of Richard Donner's 1985 medieval fantasy film, Ladyhawke. He is the current Captain of the Guard replacing his predecessor, Captain Etienne de Navarre after the latter's 2-year absence who serves the Bishop of Aquila daily.
He was portrayed by the late Ken Hutchison.
Personality[]
Opposite to his former predecessor, Captain Etienne de Navarre, Captain Marquet is shown to be mean, stubborn, deceitful, opportunistic, cruel, aggressive, selfish, arrogant, ruthless, merciless, and temperamental. He hardly shows the least bit of mercy to his prisoners including Phillipe Gaston even after the latter sincerely apologizes for accidentally scarring him on his face with one of his men's blade when struggling after his capture. He has been known to display quite a temper every time he was constantly foiled by Navarre during each encounter.
However, Marquet has shown some cowardly traits as demonstrated when he ran one of his guards, Francesco through Navarre's own sword for hesitating to kill the latter and referring to him as "Captain" due to their past relationship as old friends despite being on opposite sides, all of which he considers more as an act of treachery and treason than loyalty.
Role in the film[]
In Aquila, Captain Marquet is ordered by his master, the Bishop of Aquila to execute a few prisoners in the morning, one of them being a young thief named Phillipe Gaston a.k.a. The Mouse. When Gaston is discovered missing in his dungeon cell by escaping through a rather narrow hole in the ground, Captain Marquet and his men ride out in pursuit of him.
Eventually, Marquet and his men find him at a tavern and proceed to capture and execute him. After a few slips and escapades, his men manage to capture him, but not before Gaston accidentally scars Marquet with one of his men's blade. Further offended despite the latter's sincere apologies, Marquet orders his execution. Luckily for Gaston, the former Captain of the Guard, Etienne de Navarre arrives just in time to save him. Before further conflict, Marquet confronts Navarre, stating he knew from one of his men of his return even though he had hoped to cut the latter's throat for supposedly lying since he knew Navarre wasn't that stupid even after two years of absence. When one of his men, Francesco hesitates to kill Navarre and refers to him as "Captain" due to their past relationship as old friends despite being on opposite sides, Marquet, insulted and offended even more by this act of loyalty he considers as treachery and treason, does not hesitate to push him and have him impaled by Navarre's own sword, thus, murdering him in cold blood. This cowardly and murderous act by Marquet both saddens and angers Navarre that he vows to one day avenge his fallen friend's death before proceeding to fight off both Marquet and his remaining men. During the fight, Marquet finds himself burned by the fire he was deliberately pushed into by Navarre. After their humiliating defeat, Marquet angrily vows to kill Navarre someday when their paths cross again.
A few days later, Marquet returns to the Bishop and informs him of Gaston's escape and; especially, Navarre's return. Then, he is instructed to hunt both Navarre and Gaston down and, most important of all, not to harm the hawk that travels with Navarre under threat of death and replacement, unaware of the true reason behind it.
As more days go by, when trying to protect his master from Navarre's wrath since all other previous efforts have proven futile, Marquet finally finds himself dueling with Navarre on horseback in a cathedral before they engage in a brutal swordfight, which eventually leads to Marquet's death; thanks to Gaston's help in the matter by recovering Navarre's family sword during the fight.
