Park Yeong-gil (Korean: 박영길), better known as Captain Park, is a major antagonist in Netflix's K-drama Squid Game. He was a seemingly friendly captain and fisherman who rescues detective and vigilante Hwang Jun-ho from the sea after Jun-ho is shot by his brother, Hwang In-ho, the Front Man. Captain Park then aids Jun-ho, Choi Woo-seok and Seong Gi-hun as an "ally" in their quest to locate and dismantle the Squid Game operation.

However, it's later revealed that Captain Park is actually working against them. He sabotages their efforts to infiltrate the game island by tampering with their drones, presumably removing Gi-hun's tooth tracking device, and killing one of the team's members after being spotted at night.

Woo-seok investigates on Captain Park and finds out that he is in cohort with the Recruiter and the VIPs all the time. He calls Jun-ho to warn him and Park pulls out his MP5 to eliminate all the mercenaries and Jun-ho. He is killed after Jun-ho harpoons him in the chest with a harpoon gun.

He is portrayed by Oh Dal-su, who also portrayed Park Cheol-woong in Oldboy.

Personality[]

Captain Park is the Front Man's informant and is very loyal to him as he carries out his orders without any question. He seems to be nice to Hwang Jun-ho and his teammates, but he keeps delivering information about them behind their back, being mainly a traitorous conspirator.

Powers and Abilities[]

Intelligence: Park at first appears to be dumb, calling a drone "drome". But that is actually a cunning masquerade to hide that he's Front Man's informant and employee, working for the Squid Game. Park is also talented in sailing and fishing, as well as a great tactician and saboteur.

Deception: Park is show to be keen strategist, being able to fool Hwang Jun-ho and his teammates many times.

Victims[]

  • Drone Pilot - Stabbed and thrown overboard after finding Captain Park messing with the drone.
  • Five crew members - Shot them to death after his identity was discovered.

Trivia[]

  • In Season 3, a picture of him fishing with the Recruiter can be seen. It's never shown if they have gotten along together or not.
  • It's possible that he was a winner of a previous Squid Game, given by his former job as a Manager.
  • Park's true identity as a game staff is foreshadowed by:
    • Despite him and Jun-ho being unable to find the island for more than two years, he managed to save Jun-ho there. Furthermore, since human bodies don't float for long, the only way he could save Jun-ho is that he already knew where is the island and await there.
    • He's self-contemplation to himself about why he's helping Jun-ho find the islands for such a long time, despite getting no pay.
    • When the mercenary leader asks to fish at night, Park refuses, giving an answer to the effect of "does this look like a normal fishing boat to you?". He say this not just to obstruct the mercenary team, but also giving a clue about his true job.
    • He mentions to Jun-ho that he should join him for squid fishing if his efforts to find the islands are in vain, as it pays more than being a cop. Put this alongside organ trafficking and you got a big red flag there.
      • The soldiers involved in the organ trafficking talk about "the Captain" numerous times, which may refer to the other masked officer serving with the Front Man but could also refer to him.
    • When Choi Woo-seok asks a random fisherman why Gi-hun's GPS dental implant was placed in his bait, he replied that another fisherman had given it to him, saying it was extra bait. That another fisherman is none other than Park.
    • His ship is colored pink, the color associated with the pink uniform of the guards. He also put on a pink raincoat after killing the drone pilot.
    • He show no reaction when the booby trap door explodes on the mercenaries, despite watching it live from the drone footage, as if he expected it.
    • When Jun-ho expresses his wish to stop searching the islands, Park looks noticeably worried, as Jun-ho could possibly search for the islands without Park there to sabotage him, hence why he tries to goad him with the statement of "you'll say that and come back in a week."
