Biography[]
Teague is the corrupt leader of the local Home Guard in the region of Cold Mountain in North Carolina, USA, during the time of the American Civil War. Teague's grandfather had once owned a large portion of the land in Cold Mountain before he died, and Teague himself greatly desires the property of the preacher's daughter named Ada Monroe, as well as Ada herself. On several occasions, Teague visits Ada on her farm in Black Cove and makes her feel very uncomfortable, and Teague and his posse of henchmen later go out in search of deserters from the war. They confront Ada's kindly neighbors Esco and Sally Swanger and stab Esco to death before torturing Sally in an attempt to get her two deserter sons to come out of hiding. The plan works and as soon as they attempt to rescue their mother, Teague has his henchmen shoot them both dead. Sally is left for dead after Teague and his men leave but she is later rescued by Ada and her friend Ruby Thewes, although the experience leaves her traumatized and rendered mute.
Teague and his men later confront Ruby's father and ex-solider Stobrod and his friend Pangle in the woods at night as they sit around a fire, where Pangle inadvertently reveals that they are both deserters. Stobrod tries to convince Teague that Pangle isn't intelligent enough to know what he's saying and that they're simply , but Teague forces them both to play a tune on their fiddles before having them both shot. Pangle is killed instantly but Stobrod survives, though he is only saved from death due to being found and rescued by Ada and his daughter.
Later on, after Ada's lover William "W. P." Inman recovers from his injuries and finally returns home to Ada after deserting the war, Teague and his men surround Ada and Ruby in a snowy forest after having captured Stobrod's companion Georgia and tortured him for information on their whereabouts. Teague attempts to discover the location of Inman since he is a deserter and threatens the two women until Inman himself rides towards them on horseback to rescue them. A gunfight breaks out and Teague's men are all killed, and Teague is knocked off his horse and falls to the ground. Inman attempts to shoot Teague but realizes he has run out of ammunition, so he takes Teague's own handgun while he lies helpless in the snow and uses it to shoot him dead.
