~ Captain Wolfer in a propaganda broadcast to Tertium |
Captain Wolfer is the main antagonist of the 2022 game Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. He is a captain in the traitorous Moebian 6th regiment, and now the fallen regiment's supreme commander, having turned to the lure of Chaos. While not yet directly fought in-game, and only making a physical appearance in certain cutscenes such as the prologue, Wolfer is heard over the vox in certain missions in the Torrent, Chasm Terminus, and the Carnival, with Chasm Terminus being an instance where he directly addresses the player after hijacking their vox-comms. Additionally, in the Rejects Will Rise trailer, Wolfer was shown to wield a plasma pistol as he dispatched a zealot and Ogryn sent to hunt him down.
Captain Wolfer wears dark, spiked carapace armor over his Moebian uniform, with the distinct eight-pointed star of Chaos branded onto his chestplate, and "DEATH TO THE FALSE" painted onto his armored collar. He wears a distinctive helmet with a skull-shaped facemask, bearing the symbol of Chaos Undivided on his forehead. Under his helmet, Wolfer's face is scarred and mutated, giving a sickly, decayed visage not unlike the common Plague Zombies.
Wolfer was voiced by Harry Myers.
Biography[]
Past[]
In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war. The Moebian Domain, a significant tract of Imperial space, stood heavily battered by an encroaching "Darktide" of Chaos, xenos, and all other threats of the galaxy. Captain Wolfer served in the Moebian 6th regiment, one of the Astra Militarum regiments that protected the Moebian Domain from the Darktide, fighting what became known as the Fringe Wars. Like most of the Moebian guardsmen, Wolfer was presumably conscripted at a young age from the world of Atoma Prime, likely from its capital Hive City of Tertium, and deployed with barely any knowledge of where he was heading- for the true horror of the Fringe Wars were kept out of public eye. As such, the various Moebian regiments soon learned the real nature of the Darktide, many becoming traumatized and broken over their campaigns, only to get little recognition back home due to the mostly suppressed nature of the wars. Regardless, Wolfer eventually gained the rank of captain, and unlike other regiments, the Moebian 6th was known to be celebrated for their loyalty and combat prowess by the citizens of Tertium.
However, over the course of the increasingly grueling campaigns, most of the Moebian 6th fell to the lure of Chaos, the very power they had been fighting. They saw too much of the Dark Gods, and their already-damaged minds were corrupted by the Warp, making them reject the Imperial creed and instead embrace Nurgle, the foul god of pestilence and decay. However, while Wolfer himself turned to Chaos with the majority of his regiment, he seems to have devoted himself to Chaos Undivided rather than just Nurgle. Whatever the case, he remained an officer in his regiment, with the Moebian 6th's change of allegiance going unnoticed by the Imperium. As such, the Moebian 6th fell deeper into the deception of Chaos, believing that the 'light' of Chaos and 'truth' of Nurgle were humanity's true salvation from the tyranny of the Imperium, making them seek vengeance for what they endured in the Fringe Wars to bring 'freedom' to their brethren on Atoma- and to slay anyone who stood in their way.
Soon, the Moebian 6th were recalled to Tertium on orders of Planetary Governor Lord Margrave, who directed them to put down a growing Nurgle cult in the underhive of Tertium, known as the Cult of Admonition. Of course, the Moebian 6th instead joined forces with the cult, with Wolfer killing the colonel and remaining loyalist officers of the Moebian 6th to become its supreme commander, while also taking on the Karnak Twins, elite sibling Moebian 6th soldiers, as his lieutenants. Now in open treason and with their few remaining loyalists purged, Wolfer led the Moebian 6th and Cult of Admonition in unleashing a zombie plague in the underhive, turning masses of civilians to Poxwalkers and plague zombies, while also slaughtering any resistance they came across. Additionally, Wolfer broadcasted pro-Chaos propaganda messages across Tertium, declaring that he sought to bring prosperity and freedom from the shackles of the Imperium, still blind to the actual nature of Chaos, trading the tyranny of the Imperium for the eternal damnation of Chaos. Regardless, he sowed terror and uprisings across Tertium as he sought to convert the entire hive to Nurgle, spreading the zombie blight and even turning hulking Abhuman Ogryns to the service of Chaos. As Wolfer and his forces killed most trained veterans of the Imperial troops sent to counter him, and with other Moebian regiments occupied with either the ongoing Fringe Wars or the newly-started Indomitus Crusade, the Inquisition presence over Tertium was forced to look to penal legionnaires, better known as rejects, to take on the traitors.
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide[]
At some point, Wolfer faced off against a squad of rejects, consisting of a veteran guardsman, a zealot, an Orgyn, and a sanctioned psyker. The veteran was shot by Wolfer's men, who were in turn slain by the zealot, only for Wolfer himself to intervene and seemingly kill both the zealot and Ogryn with his plasma pistol. The psyker then moved to attack Wolfer, only to be interrupted and attacked by a Chaos Ogryn. It is unclear what the outcome of this skirmish was, but Wolfer was ultimately captured by reject squads, his armor left discarded as he was imprisoned aboard the Tancred Bastion prison ship. The ship picked up swathes of prisoners from around the sector, including the player, who was put in a cell directly across from Wolfer.
When the Tancred Bastion was returning to Tertium to have Wolfer finally interrogated and executed, the Moebian 6th boarded the ship and used a Poxburster to blow open Wolfer's cell, freeing him and returning his helmet. Additionally, the player was also freed by the blast, but Wolfer didn't care for killing the player, instead leaving the player for poxwalkers while escaping the ship with his men. However, this allowed the player to escape themselves, teaming up with Explicator Zola, an agent of the Inquisition, who recruits the player into the reject squads.
Now back in Tertium, Wolfer turned the underhive's Carnival district, already a hub of illegal entertainment and vices, into a Moebian 6th bastion and center of illicit stimm commerce from the traitors- namely, performance-enhancing combat stimms that were tainted with the blight of Nurgle, a way to spread the plague even further and enhance the regiment. Wolfer also directed his forces in capturing vital manufactorums in an attempt to make their own heavy weapons, and sabotaged many critical utilities of the hive, such as its water supply and power stations, although each plan was thwarted by rejects. Wolfer persisted with his goals regardless, but grew disdainful of the "dregs" of the Cult of Admonition, threatening to feed them to poxwalkers if they failed him. This attitude eventually extended to his own troops, who he accused of cowardice and incompetence when they failed to stop a reject squad from capturing samples of their blighted stimms in the Carnival, able to see clean through the lies of nervous Moebian 6th troops who tried claiming there were 'conflicting accounts' of enemy numbers. Additionally, Wolfer was able to summon Daemons, Beasts of Nurgle, and Chaos Spawn to support his men, as well as creating other pox-infused monstrosities such as Plague Ogryns.
Despite some of his critical ground operations being foiled, and some of his other officers assassinated by rejects, Wolfer managed to plant a spy, Mara Vinci, into the heart of Atoma's Inquisitorial command, the voidship Mourningstar. Vinci secretly fed Wolfer with inside information, which Wolfer used to eliminate several Imperial specialist squads and otherwise sabotage their operations, allowing the Moebian 6th to persist and spread the plague further across the hive. Vinci continued to supply Wolfer with inside information until she was finally caught and executed by Interrogator Rannick.
Over the course of Wolfer's uprising, Explicator Zola grew increasingly obsessed with Wolfer, who had been leading from the shadows ever since returning to Tertium, always evading direct confrontations and commanding through the Karnak Twins, who had become his proxies in meetings with other Nurgle cultists. This dedication to finding Wolfer eventually led Zola to send a rejects team to capture one of the Karnak Twins, who were based in the Torrent, the underhive's water-purification district. Zola ordered the player and their squad to kill one of the twins and leave the other alive for interrogation, intending to use them to get to Wolfer, only for Interrogator Rannick to intervene and try to cancel the unsanctioned operation, only to be unable to extract the player. As such, the rejects were forced to face and kill both Karnak Twins to reach an extraction point, leaving Zola without the information she wanted. However, Wolfer remained at large, and the impact of his twin lieutenants' death on his goals is unknown.
