Cardinal Lawrence, or secret The Reverend is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside The Devil) of The Omen franchise. He is the one responsible for the events leading to the birth of the son of the Devil.
He was portrayed by Bill Nighy, who also played Viktor in the Underworld film series, Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, Whitey in Flushed Away, Rattlesnake Jake in Rango, General Fallon in Jack The Giant Slayer, The Network in The World's End, Prince Naberius in I, Frankenstein, Leo Argyll in Ordeal by Innocence and Howard Clifford in Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.
Biography[]
When secularism began to rise in Rome, the Catholic Church became concerned that they would lose control. As a result, the church orchestrates a conspiracy where they would invoke the birth of the Antichrist and use him as a means of forcing people to return out of fear of the evil that he would wrought.
Through unknown means, Lawrence and his co-conspirators would summon a jackal demon (implied to be Satan itself) to impregnate a nun in a satanic ritual. The resulting offspring would then be raped by the jackal demon resulting in the birth of the Antichrist. Lawrence and the others had done this experiment 14 times with the result always being deformed babies not living long after birth.
However, there were two successful births, one being Carlita Scianna, who they keep locked away in the Vizzardeli Orphanage since she was too young. As revealed later in the film, Margaret Daino is another successful offspring of the demonic jackal and is manipulated into going to a bar where she is raped.
Father Brennan would become aware of the conspiracy and implores Margaret to retrieve the files revealing the Catholic Church's crimes. Realizing what happened to her, Margaret tries to abort the pregnancy only for the car she was riding in to crash.
Upon finding that she was strapped to a bed, Cardinal Lawrence oversees the birthing process. Ignoring Margaret as she pleas to be let go, he performs a crude C-section on her abdomen and pulls out the amniotic sac. Slicing it open, he announces that twins were born, one being a male. The boy is christened as the Antichrist and is handed around by the conspirators.
While they were distracted, Margaret grabs a scalpel and asks to see her newborn son. Lawrence, seeing no deception within her, hands her the baby boy. Now that she had Lawrence right where she wanted him, she slits his throat with the scalpel and threatens to kill her newborn with the surgical instrument. Unfortunately, Margaret is hesitant to kill her baby so left herself open to being stabbed by her roommate Luz and the baby is taken to be delivered to the American ambassador Robert Thorn after his biological child is secretly murdered.
Carlita saves Margaret and her baby daughter the moment the cult sets the room on fire to hide the evidence. However, Lawrence would succeed posthumously and Damien would attempt to take over the world and bring eternal damnation to the Earth until he was thwarted by Kate Reynolds in the end.
Trivia[]
- It is unknown how the plot around the Antichrist fell out of the hands of the corrupt Catholic sect. Presumably, a traitor or Satanist spy alerted others, and so they seized control of the scheme to change it from a ploy to lure the unfaithful back to the Church, into one of world domination.
