Cards Devon is one of the three secondary antagonists of the Lucky Luke comic Steaming Up The Mississippi. He is a professional cards sharp and one of the henchmen hired by Captain Lowriver to slow down the Daisy Belle in order for him to win the race.
When the Daisy Belle was about to sail, Cards Devon managed to jump on board as the bridge was closing. There, he invited Bang, the technician of the Daisy Belle, to an unfair game of poker, where he cheats to take away all of his money, allowing the Asbestos D. Plower to outrun it for some time. However, Lucky Luke saw him and, after winning the game, beat up Cards Devon for cheating, admitting that he was sent by Lowriver to stall the boat. Sent back to Lowrider's ship, he decides to settle in the Missouri.
Biography[]
After he and Barrows decided to organize a race to settle on who will have the rights to sail on the Mississippi, Lowriver meets Cards Devon and tells him to board the Daisy Belle the next day, so he can slow the boat down and allow Lowriver to outrun Barrows. When the day of the race arrives, Cards Devon quickly rushes to the Daisy Belle and jumps on board before the bridge was completely lifted. This worries Barrows as he already knows who he is associated with.
He would then invite Bang to a game of poker where he cheats against him to stall the Daisy Belle, forcing him to play until he gets his money back. To save Bang from Cards Devon's cheating, he decides to play against him. At the start of the game, Devon has four aces in his pack of cards, but Luke threatens him at gunpoint, saying he has six bullets in his revolver. Devon then bets Luke's revolver against all of his tokens, but as he gives a card to Luke, he is stopped from pulling his own cards.
Luke then switches the cards around and wins the game with four aces, resulting in Bang gaining his money back. After Luke tells everyone to get out of the room to have a little chat with Devon, he slowly approaches him as the latter backs up, attempting to dissuade him from beating him up, but to no avail. Devon is then sent flying through the door with a black eye and his clothes disheveled. Luke grabs him and angrily forces Devon to admit he was sent by Lowriver to slow the boat down. He tries to apologize, but Luke ties him up and brings him back to Lowriver. Humiliated by his defeat against Luke, he decides to leave to the Missouri.
