Biography[]
Dexter in the Dark[]
In a flashback, Dexter Morgan relates how his stepfather Harry brought him to see Carl, a recently arrested serial killer, in order to teach him a lesson after he attempted to kill another student. Harry explained how Carl had killed eleven people before being caught by the department the previous day. Carl added that he killed people as it "kept him busy".
Dexter asked Carl how he did it. Carl, seeing that Harry was trying to teach Dexter something, refused to answer and told him that once you were on the path there was no way off. Harry responded with "Don't get caught". Carl suddenly realized that Harry was teaching Dexter to be a killer and said he was a wonderful father.
As Harry and Dexter left, Harry told Dexter that Carl was going to be executed because he got careless, and that he should follow his training and restrict himself to killing people who fit his Code.
Dexter[]
Resistance is Futile[]
In a flashback, Harry and teenage Dexter are seen attending the execution by electric chair of a serial killer named Carl. Before Carl is executed, Harry explains to Dexter that this is what happens to killers who get caught, warning him to always cover his tracks if he doesn't want to end up where Carl is.
The Lion Sleeps Tonight[]
A flashback shows Harry holding the brain scan of a recently-executed killer, presumably Carl, who killed eleven women, his wife, his two children and his neighbor's dog. He compares the brain scan to Dexter's, and finds that the two perfectly match.
