Carl is the main antagonist of the 2006 drama film The Dead Girl.
He was portrayed by Nick Searcy, who also played Frank Bennett in Fried Green Tomatoes.
Biography[]
The film begins with the discovery of the titular dead girl, who is the latest victim of a serial killer preying on sex workers. She was stabbed repeatedly and left to die in a remote field. As with the previous victims, she was stripped naked, her clothes were cut up and her shoes were taken as a trophy. The victim is briefly believed to be a girl named Jenny Taylor who was abducted fifteen years ago and is presumed dead, but forensic testing rules her out; she is later identified as a young single mother and sex worker named Krista Kutcher.
Carl first appears in the film's third segment, "The Wife", where he and his wife Ruth argue about the fact that he regularly leaves her alone at night. Later, Ruth looks inside Carl's storage unit, which he claims is empty, and finds trash bags containing bloodstained women's clothing, IDs, and wallets. Reading newspaper reports, she finds that the IDs belong to the eight reported victims of the killer.
The next morning, Carl returns covered in scratches and carrying a trash bag; it is implied he is returning from killing Krista. Ruth angrily accuses him of seeing other women and threatens to leave him, at which point Carl angrily storms out to dump the bag in the storage unit. Ruth reluctantly serves him food when he returns and asks him if he knows anything about the dead girls, but he denies it. That night, Ruth contemplates handing the evidence over to the police but eventually decides against it and burns the storage unit with everything inside.
Carl later appears at the end of the final segment, "The Dead Girl", which follows Krista's final moments before she met her killer. Krista runs away after beating up a client who hurt her girlfriend Rosetta, and is left by the side of the road after her motorbike breaks down. Carl, driving by, finds her crying by the side of the road after Rosetta refuses to say she loves her and offers to drive her wherever she wants to go. The film ends with Krista happily telling Carl about her three-year-old daughter as Carl feigns caring and drives her up to the field to kill her.
