Butch is the main protagonist of the 1979 British controversial prison drama movie Scum, He is a violent offender who is transferred to a Borstal, After he was blamed for his brother's theft of a scrap metal, During his time, Carlin experiences extreme cases of violence from other inmates, probing him to do defend himself and wreck havoc by becoming the new "Daddy" and his bitter rivarly with both with Banks and The Governor.
He was portrayed by Ray Winstone, who also played Captain Teague in Cold Mountain, Soldier Sam in the English dub of The Magic Roundabout, Arnold French in The Departed, George McHale in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Ares in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Admiral Orlock in Killzone 3, Bad Bill in Rango, Tubal-Cain in Noah, Tyson in The Queen's Corgi, General Dreykov in Black Widow and Papa Bear in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
Biography[]
Three young men arrive at a borstal in a van owned by the prison: Carlin, accused of stealing from his brother's scrap yard; Angel who is accused of car theft, and finally Davis, who escaped from a juvenile rehabilitation institution. Each of them is assigned a location; Angel and Davis get two separate private rooms, while Carlin is sent to a dorm.
Carlin, already on his second transfer for the assault against a director, decides to keep a low profile. He will then befriend Archer, an eccentric inmate out of the canons, intent on using the methods of non-violence, to generate as much annoyance as possible. Banks, who knows Carlin for his reputation, seeks him out to engage in a real conflict with him: at stake is the maintenance of power and influence over that wing of the center.
Carlin is unable to integrate into the dormitory, and after witnessing the violence against the more timid Davis, bullied and attacked by Banks, he is attacked by the latter, who repeatedly hits him with a headbutt.
Carlin will scientifically plan his revenge on Banks. Choosing the right moment, he will use a makeshift weapon by inserting two billiard balls inside a sock and hit the rival in the toilets. This will serve him to define the new status quo: Carlin himself will be the new "Daddy", a term used to indicate the head of the wing. If Banks gets in the way of this state of affairs, interfering with the affairs of Carlin and his friends, he will be killed. Carlin's rise will be unstoppable and following the violent beating of the "Daddy" who rules the wing adjacent to his, he will conquer power over that as well.
Under Carlin's leadership, prison life seems to be improving, especially for younger and more vulnerable inmates. In this way, Carlin gains trust among the guards of the facility, who are interested in maintaining order through the power of the numerous "Daddies". Carlin asks the guards for a transfer from the dormitory to a single cell, in exchange for an agreement that assigns him the responsibility as the natural leader. Mr Goodyear, the director, then offers Carlin a leadership position in the facility.
Toyne, an inmate at the center, learns of his wife's death through a letter written by his in-laws. In the maelstrom of despair, he cuts the veins in his wrists. He will be transferred to another prison, but the news of a second suicide attempt, this time successful, will reach all the inmates. Davis, meanwhile, is framed for theft by Eckersley and then charged. He will later be raped by three young men in a greenhouse. Sands, the warden, watches the violence, smiling. Davis slips into despair and kills himself by cutting himself with a razor blade inside his room. With a sudden change of heart, he presses the button to call for help, but is ignored by the guardian Greaves, who leaves him to die in a pool of blood.
Davis' suicide will provoke very strong emotional reactions within the facility, up to the refusal of food by all the inmates, during the daily meal served in the cafeteria. Carlin starts a mass riot in the dining room. Along with Archer and a friend of Toyne's named Meakin, they are dragged unconscious and covered in blood after being beaten by the guards. The governor of the facility will inform them that the damage inflicted on the dining room will be compensated by subtracting money from individual earnings. In the concluding sequence, the governor himself will ask for a minute of silent prayer for the inmates who took their own lives.
