Carlo Gervasi is a supporting character in the HBO Television Series The Sopranos.
He is a caporegime of the DiMeo Crime Family and the leader of the Altieri Crew. He is in control of the docks at the Newark ports and highly feared and respected by the rest of the mobsters he surrounds himself with. Despite being with the Altieri's, he is mostly seen hanging around Tony Soprano and his crew. He is also the mentor of Walden Belfiore.
He was portrayed by Arthur J. Nascarella, who also played Frank Lagonda in Cop Land and Frankie Perello in Running Scared.
Biography[]
Carlo Gervasi is introduced as a soldier in the DiMeo Crime Family prior to the events of the series and eventually rises to the rank of capo by the fourth season. While he is mostly seen as a family chef and wise enforcer for the Soprano Crew, in actuality, he is the captain of the Altieri Crew, which he had taken over after the death of Jimmy Altieri in 1999, after he turned Informant.
Throughout the series, Carlo is seen as a part in many of the family's activities. He participates in loan sharking, extortion, and drug trafficking, which are common operations within the family. He also takes part in several violent acts, including murders ordered by the higher-ups in the organization and is well-respected by the rest of his fellow gangsters.
In the final season, word gets around the family when Captain of the Aprile Crew, Vito Spatafore is revealed to be a homosexual which Carlo advocates for. This is seen as an embarrassment to the DiMeos, which also leads to Vito leaving New Jersey and skipping to New Hampshire. However, he soon returns and is hunted down by New York mob boss, Phil Leotardo who has him murdered. Later, Fat Dom Gamiello, a member of the Lupertazzi Crime Family and one of Vito's killers, enters Satriale's, where family consigliere Silvio Dante and Carlo are present in the kitchen. Dom begins to mock Vito's homosexuality and death which angers Carlo and Silvio, with the two both murdering him with a knife. The two hide the body and inform Tony of the murder which further escalates tensions between the DiMeo and Lupertazzi families.
Carlo's personal life is also depicted in the series. He is shown to be a family man, particularly concerned about his sadistic and brutish son, Jason. When Jason gets into trouble, Carlo tries to steer him away from the criminal path, demonstrating a more human side to his character. However, Jason continues to go further in his more malicious activities, where he also tries to manipulate Tony's son, A.J. into going into a similar life of crime.
In the final part of Season 6, Carlo's world begins to unravel. Jason gets arrested on a drug-related charge, which puts immense pressure on Carlo. Facing the possibility of a long prison sentence for his son, Carlo decides to cooperate with the FBI. This decision is a turning point in the series, as it signifies the collapse of the tight-knit loyalty within the crime family. Carlo's cooperation with the authorities leads to significant legal troubles for Tony and other members of the DiMeo family.
Carlo's fate is left somewhat ambiguous, but his decision to turn informant marks a critical shift in the power dynamics of the series and underscores the theme of betrayal and the consequences of a life of crime. It is highly implied that he is murdered however as Tony's right-hand man, Paulie Gualtieri informs him of this so it can be estimated that he was ultimately murdered for becoming a rat.
Trivia[]
- Carlo's choice of murdering Dom for his homophobic remarks has made viewers speculate if Carlo himself is a homosexual, with him also never being seen having relations with a comare and is also not much of a talker himself.
