Carlton Bloom is the main antagonist of the first Black Mirror episode "The National Anthem". He was a very popular and deranged artist who won the Turner Prize Award. He became sick of the media and government not paying attention to the real world, and intended to prove a point by kidnapping Princess Susannah and blackmailing Prime Minister Callows to have sex with a pig in front of the entire world.

He is played by an unknown actor.

Personality

Not much is known about Carlton’s personality, apart from being completely disillusioned from the media and government, growing tired of them focusing on pointless things and wished to probe a point to the world. His methods were extreme, effectively forcing Micheal to have intercourse with a pig in front of the entire world, threatening the life of the Princess. He also shows extreme intelligence, able to cover his tracks while being able to hide his location. However, it is shown that Bloom was honorable, as not only did he spare Susannah, he let her go early on to drive the point home, as no one noticed since they were busy watching the screen.

Biography

Not much is known about Bloom’s life, except he was an artist who won the Turner Prize Award. He grew to be tired of the the media and world watching screens instead of focusing on the real world issues. In order to drive his point, he kidnapped Princess Susanna on her way to her wedding, and filmed her tiered up, and made her say the negotiated terms. Unless Prime Minister Micheal Callows has sex with a pig on national television at four o’clock, he will kill the princess.

Bloom is shown a few times, being one of the various people watching the news of the incident. He is shown being passively listening in, while cleaning his kitchen.

When Callow’s PR team attempts to use body doubles to fake the situation, he cuts off Susannah’s finger and mails it to them, which makes the media pressure Callows to have sex with the pig to save her life. With time running out, Callows is forced to go ahead, and in front of the entire viewing world, has intercourse with the pig.

However, it is revealed Bloom didn’t even cut off Susannah’s finger, cutting off his own, and he let her go at 3:30, in which no one noticed due to being entranced on TV and waiting for the scene to unfold. After completing his mission, Bloom hangs himself in his house, getting away with his actions.
