Sometimes after an hour of apathy, my strange and beautiful companion would take my hand and hold it with a fond pressure, renewed again and again; blushing softly, gazing in my face with languid and burning eyes, and breathing so fast that her dress rose and fell with the tumultuous respiration. It was like the ardour of a lover; it embarrassed me; it was hateful and yet overpowering; and with gloating eyes she drew me to her, and her hot lips travelled along my cheek in kisses; and she would whisper, almost in sobs, "You are mine, you shall be mine, and you and I are one for ever".
~ Laura, Carmilla's companion in "Carmilla", Chapter 4).

Carmilla is the titular main character of the 1872 Gothic novella "Carmilla" by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. Set in Styria,  it tells the story of a young woman, Laura, who befriends with lovely Carmilla, only to find out that she is actually a female vampire, Countess Mircalla Karnstein. Carmilla was first published in the magazine The Dark Blue in late 1871 and early 1872 and then in the author's collection of short stories In a Glass Darkly in the latter year.  Carmilla has been adapted many times for cinema.

A  tall, slender and lovely brunette with rich and brilliant skin, large dark eyes and languid movements, Carmilla has unearthly beauty.  She can take an appearance of black cat.

Carmilla chooses young girls as her victims. Her romantic behavior toward Laura both attract and repulse other girl.
