Welcome, Hell sovereign Overlords. I've invited you all here because you represent the controlling powers of our city. Together, you own millions of souls. Souls that are at risk with the new Extermination schedule.
~ Carmilla greeting the other Overlords.
I always thought that I would keep blood off my face. But when that thing attacked, I had to act to cross that line and keep them safe. But, if anyone knew, then all of Hell would rise to war. And who's to say who'd survive the fray? I might lose the ones that I was killing for. So I, I'll be your keeper. Do whatever it takes, I'll make the mistakes. I'll keep you safe and keep this secret.

~ Carmilla to Zestial.

Carmilla Carmine is the one of the two overarching protagonists (alongside Lucifer Morningstar) in Season 1 of the adult animated series Hazbin Hotel. She is the arch-enemy of Velvette.

She is one of Hell’s most powerful Overlords and is the ruler of Hell’s weapons industry who is also arguably their leader as well as the one responsible for killing an Exorcist to protect her daughters. While she isn’t truly evil, she still caused the events of the first season to play out but unintentionally with the Overlords learning that those from Heaven can be killed and Carmine fearing that what she did will make the situation worse. As a result of her killing an Exorcist, she is responsible for almost all of the events in the first season.

She is voiced by Daphne Rubin-Vega.

Biography[]

Past[]

Very little is known of Carmilla's past. At some point, she managed to accumulate enough power and resources to be among the Pride Ring’s most feared Demons aside from the royalty and nobility. Later on in time, she met Zestial and the other Overlords, with her having a genuine friendship with the former.

During the recent Extermination, she ended up killing one of the Exorcists by beheading it, thus leading to the current events of the series.

Pilot[]

In “That’s Entertainment”, she is first shown opening the window curtains of her, Zestial, Zeezi and Lucifer’s residence to witness the end of the recent Extermination Day with her giving a burning glare. Later on, she and Zestial appear in Vaggie’s story about Alastor’s origins alongside the other Overlords.

Season 1[]

In "Overture", the body of the Exorcist Carmine killed is first seen when Adam and Lute discover it just as a furious Adam states that the Demons will soon learn never to do it again once they return to Hell in six months.

In "Scrambled Eggs", Carmilla makes her first proper debut where she and Zestial host a meeting with each of the Overlords which is interrupted by Velvette who appears and throws the Angel's head onto the table with the social media Overlord disrespecting and mocking Zestial for not attacking the Angels which angers Carmilla so much so that she argues with Velvette in the form of a song with Carmine talking about the Vees’ arrogance while Velvette tries to convince the Overlords to go to war with the Exorcists and successfully berates Carmilla while being suspicious about her intentions with the enraged Carmine ending the meeting and the Overlords leave while Alastor has an Egg Boi named "Frank" follow Carmine and Zestial to their private quarters where she reveals that she was the one who killed the Exorcist but only to keep her daughters safe although she fears that Sinners wouldn’t stand a chance against the Exorcists and that the Angels will retaliate which leads to her singing a duet with Vaggie with Frank returning to Alastor.

Trivia[]

  • Since her debut, it has been theorized that Carmilla is related to both Vaggie and Velvette. Explaining that they’re her two other daughters although it has yet to be confirmed. It should also be noted that Carmine, Valentino, and Vaggie all speak Spanish.
  • Out of all the Overlords seen so far, Carmine is arguably the least evil as she values her partners and loves her children while certain Overlords like Alastor or the Vees do things mostly for their own benefit and out of pragmatic reasons while Carmine genuinely cares about Sinners not wanting them to risk their lives and be killed by the Angels.
  • Just like how Alastor and some other Overlords represent or rule over different media or business industries, Carmine rules over Hell’s weapons industry and is where most of if not all the weapons in Hell come from.
  • It is never specified which kind of Demon she is although judging from her having daughters it’s likely she’s a Hellborn Demon since Sinners are incapable of having children although it’s also possible that she is a Sinner and her daughters also died or she just adopted them or they are hellborn.
  • She is first mentioned in the Helluva Boss episode “The Harvest Moon Festival” although she first appeared in the Hazbin Hotel pilot.
  • A drawing of her along with drawings of Rosie and Katie Killjoy make an appearance on Blitzo's “Boss Goals” chart in the Helluva Boss pilot, meaning that he takes a romantic or sexual interest in her.
  • Carmilla's daughters Odette and Clara are named after the ballet characters in The Nutcracker and Swan Lake.
  • Thanks to having a similar hair, skin and eye colour to Vaggie, as well as dueting with the latter (establishing some parallels in the story), it's been theorized that Carmilla could secretly be a fallen angel herself and that the blessings on her weapons are ones she bestows herself. Other hints to this are her knowledge of the Exorcists and their weaknesses and her immediately knowing that Vaggie was one herself.
  • Her name "Carmilla" means "garden" or "orchard", while "Carmine" is a shade of red and a red pigment.
  • Carmilla's attire is similar to a ballerina.
