Biography[]
Teal Mask[]
Carmine first appears in the Teal Mask, meeting the player character, and immediately becoming wary of them, seeing them as an outsider that cannot be trusted. She challenges them to a battle, which she loses. To her dismay, the player bonds well with Kieran. Carmine is shown as often lashing out at Kieran unduly, and contributing to his own lack of self-esteem. As well as this, she is overprotective, and has made Kieran rely on her for everything, oftentimes making Kieran feel useless. She treats the player character with disgust throughout the mask festival that Kieran invites the player to. It is there, while Kieran is away, that Carmine and the player meet Ogerpon, the Ogre that Kieran (who is implied to be autistic, and one of his many autistic traits being his hyperfixation on the ogre) takes a great interest in. Carmine tells the player to cover it up, due to it being late at night and not wanting to endanger Kieran. However, she continues to cover it up from him as the Ogre keeps meeting the player, needing help to retrieve its masks. Carmine covers it up by yelling at Kieran to go away very harshly, and it is there that it is revealed that Carmine has had a past of physical violence to Kieran, suggesting that she is to blame, at least partially for many of his mental health issues and insecurities.
When Kieran steals the masks, in order to force Carmine and the player to allow him to help his sister and one of his only friends, he correctly points out to Carmine that he has been shut out by her. Kieran accidentally unleashes the loyal three, and Carmine blames him for it, berating him. While Kieran goes to the town to clear the Ogre's name, Carmine and the player track down and defeat the loyal three. When Kieran, insecure, and also feeling betrayed at being lied to by the player about seeing the Ogre, challenges the player for Ogerpon, Carmine harshly blames him, and writes off any responsibility for how Kieran ended up, blaming it all on 'teenage angst.' This refusal to accept responsibility means that Kieran never finds out that the player did not want to lie to him, and thus sends him down a spiral of self-hatred and leaving him to develop a false narrative that the player does not treat him as a friend should because he is weak, which leads him to pursue strength, putting Carmine at fault at least partially, for not taking responsibility and admitting the truth of the situation to Kieran. However, when Kieran's mental state gets even worse by the end of the Teal Mask, Carmine accepts some responsibility.
Indigo Disk[]
In the Indigo Disk, Carmine has changed and has become warmer to the player. She is concerned with Kieran's decline in mental health, and Kieran's tendency to snap out at everyone, due to his own consuming self-hatred and desire to prove his worth to the player, still, by the fault of Carmine, under the false belief that the player lied to him deliberately and to hurt him. Carmine invites the player over on a school trip, hoping the player can help Kieran where she could not.
In a form of comeuppance, Kieran is now the one lashing out at Carmine, often telling her to shut up. Carmine carries a great deal of guilt over what happened at Kitakami, and wants the player to help him get out of his mental state. She rightly remains wary of Drayton, believing he is trying to manipulate the player to further his own ends, and fears that Drayton may end up hurting Kieran further. She continues to remain skeptical of Drayton's friendly attitude with the player, up until Kieran loses to the player. Going down with the player, Kieran, and Briar to Area Zero, she notices Kieran's old self slipping through the cracks, and points it out, causing Kieran to get embarrassed and snap out at her. She is constantly condescending towards him throughout the conversations she has with him in Area Zero, dismissing Kieran's concerns of over-reliance on the player character, which makes Kieran further insecure. She scolds Kieran for wanting to still get stronger as Kieran tries to capture Terapagos. When Kieran Terrastalizes Terapagos and loses control over him, Carmine further scolds him for what happened. Furthermore, she, possibly still in shock, does nothing to stop Terapagos' beam of energy from hitting Kieran. Luckily, the player saves Kieran's life. She joins in the player's battle against Terapagos, who is out of control, but is swiftly defeated. She continues to scold and yell at Kieran, which causes Kieran to further berate himself and slip further and further into self-hatred. However, she finally uplifts Kieran, insisting that the player character needs him, which causes Kieran to join in the battle against Terapagos and win. Carmine, filled with regret, seeing Kieran cry after the battle with Terapagos, joins in and cries as well. Kieran takes a break from Blueberry Academy for his own mental health, and Carmine joins him.
Mochi Mayhem[]
When Kieran greets the player with their Paldea friends on Kitakami, Carmine comes in with purple irises, only able to scream about mochi. Some suspect a curse, in reality, she is possessed by Pecharunt. Soon after, the player, now close friends with Kieran, arrives with his Paldea friends, and Carmine appears, scaring and confusing them. As the whole town is taken over, only Kieran and the player are left. However, Kieran holds a horde of possessed townsfolk, including Carmine, back from attacking the player, who catches Pecharunt. Once Pecharunt is captured, its control of Carmine stops.
When Carmine and Kieran return to school, they can be found in the clubroom. Carmine still has moments of anger outbursts at the player and at Kieran, however, they are much more controlled, and far less serious, indicating that she has learnt her lesson as to what they can lead to. She also tells the player to delete any videos they have of her doing the 'mochi-mochi' dance.
Trivia[]
Carmine considers herself a 'kid' even though she is in fact a young adult, evidenced by her height disparity with the 14 year old Kieran, and the fact that she is considered 'old enough' to know the truth about the ogre, indicating that she has reached a certain point of maturity in her life, as well as her physical features. This could indicate some form of reluctance to grow up that she holds.
