~ Carter Blake to Norman Jayden in "Kick-Off Meeting". |
Lt. Carter Blake is one of two main villains and the secondary antagonist of the 2010 crime/thriller video game Heavy Rain. He is the second archenemy of Ethan Mars & Madison Paige and also the main archrival of Norman Jayden as well as one of his main archenemies. He works at the Philadelphia Police Station as a promoted lieutenant.
Personality[]
He was assigned to work with FBI agent Norman Jayden in tracking down the Origami Killer. Unlike Jayden, Blake has ruthless methods in dealing with crime such as beating an innocent civilian that he accuses of being a criminal and jumping to conclusions too quickly. Despite Norman and Blake being enemies throughout most of the game they do have a tendency to show care and protectiveness for each other. For example when Norman confronts Nathaniel after he pulls a gun on Carter in self-defense after being pushed around and kicked by Blake Norman can then either calm him down until he's arrested or execute him, and if Norman loses the fight between him and Korda in the slaughterhouse Carter comes to the rescue party late and knocks Korda out with a shovel preventing Norman from further harm showing that he is capable of occasional heroics and bravery even though they are a very rare thing for him to do and usually just done out of absolute necessity rather than being fighting for some noble causes. Blake constantly gets into scuffles with his fellow officer Norman Jayden as they don't see things the same way regarding the case. While Norman enforces the laws and tries to do what is right, Blake is more concerned along with his boss Perry about having someone accused of being The Origami Killer without proper evidence which causes a complete disarray in their investigation progress. Jayden also meets a lot of corruption and prejudice at the police station as people working there are more worried about his ARI use and drug addiction than actual crimes happening out there.
It also doesn't help that Blake never does things by the book he just goes after assumptions and is easily fooled by people's antics thinking everything is related to The Origami Killings if hears the slightest hint of someone acting odd (proven when Grace reports Ethan). Perry doesn't show much better behavior because he's actually seen condoning Blake's misbehavior and commends him for being destructive to his victims. Blake does show a more tender & a calmer side to him when he chats with Jayden in the car asking him if it's his first time shooting someone (if Nathaniel does end up getting killed) to which Norman can respond in different ways but if Jayden only succeeds in convincing and instructing Nathaniel to drop his gun, turn around and put his hands behind his head Carter gets irritated by the lack of reaction in that situation from Norman. For a pretty wicked and a villainous person that Blake is, he does have generally good & true intentions and wants to desperately find the Origami Killer despite having no luck and only a few leads before and looks at Jayden as his comrade even if he doesn't personally like him or agree with his methodology and forensic science & research. Jayden can also call out Carter's and the entire police department lack of progress with the case to which Blake gets offended, upset and hurt by. Blake is also a controlling, insensitive and a demanding individual being extremely furious if he's not seen in the spotlight or not having the attention he thinks he deserves and usually throws a fit of rage if Norman says something wise or clever to him in response. Carter's also very physically forceful usually kicking chairs or humans (and punching them) as he violently beat up the shrink for simply more information about Ethan Mars and then does the same thing to the latter if he gets arrested. Norman can choose to intervene and prevent most of the damage from happening.
Carter is a very unpredictable, corrupt, brutal, thuggish, reckless, rude, slimy, vulgar, stubborn, spiteful, confrontational, dangerous, manipulative, sadistic, aggressive and an insane dirty cop as he showcases that when he commits vast felonies for the sake of "closing the case" mentality he has from Perry and pulls a gun on a fellow officer when Norman is simply defending & proclaiming Ethan's innocence (if he gets caught by the police) telling Blake that he should not beat him up for the extreme measures of gaining a confession. This angers Blake greatly and every time Norman steps in whenever Carter is up to his worst in malicious police brutality and practices Blake gets increasingly more frustrated and unstable showing an incredible lack of restraint and complete impulsiveness to his behavior. When Norman says to him that Ethan doesn't match the psychological profile of the serial killer Blake blatantly ignores it and sarcastically scolds him telling him that he knows that the jury won't pick "his theories" over concrete proof as he calls his progress in the investigation showing a bit of a delusion and narcissism. Blake also seems to underestimate Jayden a lot second-guessing his judgment at many times. Perry also noticeably became worried and distraught when he saw that a FBI agent was sent to help with this telling Jayden that the press needs a perpetrator to be served on a silver platter to which Norman responds: "With all due respect sir I'm here to arrest a serial killer the rest of it is none of my business.".
Although being one of the most violent and wrathful characters on screen in Heavy Rain Blake never gets punished (other than being suspended or haunted by Norman in the ARI world) for his actions and is one of the few villains in this game that does get away with most of the things he does. Blake is also shown to be jealous, envious and contemptuous of Norman's abilities and success as an investigator and constantly antagonizes & berates him for fun in front of other officers or even in private with no one around other than them two portraying a very verbally abusive and a bullying nature. His overly judgmental and usually uncaring volatile & explosive attitude, temper tantrums and inconsistence also becomes a massive problem & a hindrance in the story for the main paragons. Usually on bad terms with Jayden, Paige and Mars mainly due to them being in opposition with his conspiracies and ideas, Blake does have a decent, respectful and a friendly relationship with his boss Leighton Perry, coworkers Ash & Gary, Grace Mars, former lieutenant Scott Shelby and sometimes Norman Jayden. Blake's mental state also gets rapidly worse the longer the case goes on as he shows more increasingly unstable and abusive behavior towards the people he encounters.
Nothing is known about Blake's past, personal life or connections making him a pretty enigmatic character within the Heavy Rain fandom. It is known however that he and Scott worked together for some years in the Philadelphia Police Station. Given how similar their police methods are it's a pretty safe assumption that the two of them used to be great colleagues, acquaintances and closely involved in investigations. Even though on Scott's part he remembers Blake as "a twisted fuck" in Eureka chapter in one of his thoughts showing a solid disdain for him. It is also very plausible that Blake was also suspicious and distrustful of Scott the way he glared at him after Scott left the police station after he told Ash about Manfred's murder and Blake promised to take care of it. Despite every one of his weaknesses and many bad traits he's not a complete monster as he does show honor, protectiveness, and is also the most sophisticated villain in this game as he shows that by being capable of showing respect to those he deems worthy of it (which includes Norman, Ethan, Madison, Shaun & any other officer he works with). Often when he argues with Norman although being incredibly uncooperative, annoying & nitpicky it does plays for a funny & a hilarious banter between the two of them especially if Jayden takes "the aggressive approach". Carter also does have tendencies of being cool-headed and composed as he shows that the first time he meets Jayden in the junkyard and speaks to Ethan Mars about his lost son although those two being the only instances of it happening. His ambitions are mostly part of his grandeur of delusions state that he's in which makes him a tiny bit sympathetic towards the player despite not really deserving it because of how dangerous, hateful, reckless and psychopathic he is. Despite showing a few redeeming qualities here and there he's the secondary antagonist of this game & the most dangerous person in the plot outside the main villain.
Biography[]
Meeting Norman Jayden[]
Norman meets Blake in the junkyard to look for some clues in the place. After some questions, the latter says that he is busy and that he and Norman should talk later in his office. When Norman asks if he's allowed to investigate, Blake agrees to let him investigating for clues.
Questioning Ethan Mars[]
Blake and an officer named Ash (if Norman didn't take the Triptocaine, he would join) interrogate Ethan of what happened. Afterwards, he let Ethan go and plans on contacting him if he has more questions. When Ethan asks if the Origami Killer got something to do with Shaun's disappearance, Blake claims that his son probably ran away and will be found in the next couple of hours. Ethan gets more worried and asks what if it is The Origami Killer which Blake responds to well then we have four days to find him alive.
Capturing Ethan Mars[]
Blake and Norman are waiting for Ethan to come out and arrest him. The latter, however, is not convinced that Ethan is the Origami Killer.
At first, Norman questions Ethan in order to save Shaun. However, he gives up, causing Blake to interrogate and beat Ethan up. Norman can either take action or not; if he does by pushing and punching him in the face, Blake would pull a gun on him, which Norman warns him that if he does that, he will be fired. Knowing this, Blake orders Norman to leave before he plans to kill him.
History with Scott Shelby[]
When Scott, along with Lauren, is caught, Blake frees him. It must be because both of them have great history since Scott is in the police force. Interestingly, he is the only protagonist Blake is acting nice, contrasting the hostility to Norman.
Possible suspect of being the Origami Killer[]
While Norman is having a dead end to the investigation, Blake arrives and tells him to leave since the police now knows that Ethan is the Origami Killer. However, Norman is not convinced of that and calls Blake an "unbalanced psychopathic asshole". He takes that as a compliment and leaves.
If Norman starts accusing Blake, he would put him at gunpoint, which Blake is infuriated by this. His boss, Captain Perry, is angered of what Norman did and takes him off the case.
Fate[]
If Norman solves the case, Blake would see him in a rush, causing him and the police force to follow him.
If the four protagonists ended up together in the final chapter, he and his boss, Captain Perry, are not included in the news report.
If Ethan is killed while Madison and Norman are around, he and Perry are suspended for an indefinite period.
The only ending he appears in is "Uploaded". In the ending, he rejects his boss' invitation to go to Norman's funeral, claiming that he never cooperated well Norman, and his boss allows that. When Blake asks what to do with Norman's sunglasses, Perry replies to let him do anything he wants with it. While doing some work, Blake puts on the ARI, and is sent to a virtual reality. At first he enjoys it, then suddenly an illusion of Norman shows up, frightening him in the process. It is implied that he will be haunted by the illusion for the rest of his life even without the ARI.
Trivia[]
- Carter is only on good terms with Scott Shelby, unlike Ethan, Madison or Norman as he is hostile towards them.
