I have a gun. It's pointed at your heart. Now, if you have anything to say to me, say it gently. I don't want you upsetting the child. You're her mother! You're scared and angry. And if looks could kill my dear, I would be dead.

Biography[]

Dr. Carter Nix Sr. was a pioneer of dissociative identity disorder research and how child development plays a hand in the development of the disorder. Dr. Lynn Waldheim collaborated on the project to the extent of co-writing a book, Raising Cain, elaborating on a child patient named Cain with a tortured childhood that resulted in his alters. Waldheim was horrified Cain was personally tortured and conditioned by none other than Nix Sr., causing her to quit the project immediately. if she knew or met Cain, she'd had found the child is Nix Sr.'s own son, Carter Nix Jr., who took on thug Cain, scared boy Josh, and caregiver Margo as his alters. Waldheim reported Sr.'s crimes to the police, but before Sr., could be arrested, he forged a suicide note and disappeared, leaving his scarred, psychotic son behind.

Sr. never gave up the research, though. Setting up a secret, illegal facility in the wilderness of Norway to torture more children into gaining alter personalities, he got back in touch with Jr. and oppressed and provoked him enough to recruit him in abducting more children aged three or under to have as control subjects. He employed his alters to abet Sr. as well, without hijacking Nix Jr. and thus the entire spree operation. Sr. is revealed to be staying in a motel in the same city Jr. lives in. When Cain steps in and makes Nix chloroform mother Karen Bowman and stuff her in the trunk of her car to acquire her son Sam, Sr. confronts Cain and chastises him for the radical, violent approach. Saying Jr. needs to be in charge and simply go for the children, he sedates Cain so Jr. can come forward, hoping he'll keep to abductions of the children alone.

But his alters unravel when Nix Jr. finds his wife, Dr. Jenny O'Keefe, having sex with her previous mister, Dr. Jack Dante, who's widowed after his comatose wife died and whom O'Keefe plans to marry when she leaves Nix Jr. Despite Cain coming forward and killing Karen to abduct Sam, a babysitter named Nan to get an infant the Nix family knows, and nearly drowning O'Keefe to steal Amy, as well as framing Dante for all the crimes, Sr. moves ahead as planned. Waldheim is called in when the connections are revealed to the child tortures, and when O'Keefe returns and attacks Jr., Jr. is taken into custody, revealing he's always been Cain, whom Waldheim never expected to meet. She interrogated Jr. and his alters alone, but it proves to be a dire mistake when she and the guarding cop are knocked out, Nix stealing her wig as Margo to escape looking like her.

O'Keefe tracks the hotel, unknowingly standing next to Nix Jr. in women's garb carrying a bag of groceries. Finding Sr. on the balcony holding Amy, O'Keefe draws a scalpel on him and screams for her daughter back. Sr. refuses and smugly preaches his work and saying because of his faked death, he'll get away with everything and won't ever be found. Dante and the police arrive just in time, causing Sr. to be in a standoff with then while threatening Amy simultaneously with a revolver and dangling her over the motel overpass balcony. Everyone's surprised to see when Margo gets the other children out of the way, she takes O'Keefe's scalpel which she dropped and stabs Sr. to death. Dante catches a falling Amy, nearly being impaled by a large clock hand Sr. shot and broke, but also being saves by being tackled away just in time. Jr. and his alters escape and go on the run, while all the children are saved. Nix as Margo later appears to O'Keefe and Amy, leaving all their fates unknown.
