~ The Cat as she stalks Robin. |
The Cat is the main antagonist of the Netflix/Aardman short film Robin Robin. She is a hungry cat bent on catching and devouring the avian protagonist Robin, as well as her adopted family.
She was voiced by Gillian Anderson, who also voiced Queen Vorkana in Close Encounters of the Herd Kind, Joanna Elisabeth of Holstein-Gottorp in The Great and Blanche DuBois in the 2014 West End production of A Streetcar Named Desire.
Robin Robin[]
The Cat is first introduced invading a robins' nest. An egg falls out of it and is discovered by a family of mice, who save it from the Cat. The orphaned egg hatches, revealing a robin chick. The mice raise the robin as their own.
Years pass by and it's almost Christmas. The protagonist, Robin, has grown into a hybrid of mouse and bird. She tries to make her family proud by stealing food from a nearby house. After an unsuccessful heist, Robin goes to a nearby shed to think, unaware that it is the wicked Cat's lair - the same one who ate Robin's parents. She escapes from the Cat and runs into an old Magpie. They run from the Cat and make it to the Magpie's home, where Robin explains to the Magpie that she was raised by mice.
Robin and Magpie sneak into the "Who-man" house to obtain a Christmas star, but make a huge mess by mistake. Robin lands into the lair of the Cat, who taunts her for her upbringing and tries to eat her. The Magpie comes to Robin's rescue with a match and Robin tries to defend herself against the feline villain, but mistakenly lights a bunch of fireworks. Robin and Magpie return to his den with the star in tow, but Robin is ashamed of the destruction she caused and tells the Magpie she wishes she was a real mouse.
Robin and her family reunite, but the Cat finds them. She chases Robin, her mouse family, and the Magpie into the Magpie's den. The Cat prepares to eat Robin's family, but Robin uses her singing to distract her. The Cat chases Robin onto a heavy tree branch and prepares to attack, but the branch snaps under her weight, sending her tumbling into an icy river. While Robin manages to escape by flying, the Cat is swept away by the water.
Her fate is unknown, presumably that she froze to death or was simply washed away.
