“ | You're my enemy, but you're so cute. I've thought and thought about it and I finally decided. So will you? I love you Diana! | „ |
~ General Deathzero asking Diana to marry him. |
“ | Um, I guess you have to fight my —seven?— evil ex-boyfriends. Um, if you want to, like, date me. | „ |
~ Ramona Flowers tells Scott Pilgrim about her evil exes. |
Villains who have been (or still are) "lovers" of a hero, whether it was true love, a sexual relationship, marriage, an affair, a one-time fling, or just a lie. These villains can also be the love interest of the hero and may want to make the villain switch sides. The love from the hero may even redeem the villain (though there are some exceptions). Hero's Lovers could be Pure Evil if their love interests are for lustful desires.
If the villain's love interest is neutral or just nice (e.g. Early Grayce, Ego and Tex Hex), they do not count.
Examples of a non-PE Hero's Lover include:
- Han Jae-hee and Joo Da-hae betrayed their lovers and were sent to jail, where they later suffered from downfall.
- Drake was obsessed with Marina in a lustful way and he did whatever he could to claim Marina as his mate for the Full Moon Mating Ceremony.
- Baroness: She was Duke's fiancee in the movie before she became evil.
- Pasha Antipov was Lara Antipova's husband; however he abandoned Lara to serve in WWI. He is presumed MIA but actually becomes a ruthless renegade Bolshevik commander known as Strelnikov.
- Cal Hockley was Rose DeWitt Bukater's arrogant fiancé in an arranged marriage; however, Jack Dawson came along and Rose fell in love with him and came to despise Cal because of his arrogance, violent temper and ruthlessness.
- Catwoman and Talia al Ghul, who both had romantic involvement with Batman.
- Creek was the love interest Poppy and he seemed to be aware of it. However, Poppy's crush on Creek ended after he betrayed her and the other Trolls, in order to avoid being eaten by Bergens.
- Grant Ward, one of the leaders of HYDRA, developed romantic feelings for Skye shortly before betraying her and S.H.I.E.L.D, then attempted to earn her trust again. Ward also had a brief, purely sexual relationship with Melinda May during his time on Coulson's team.
- Hannibal Lecter had feelings for Clarice Starling or slept with Alana Bloom.
- Kaya had feelings for Krrish while she was disguised as Krrish's wife.
- Kylo Ren fell in love with Rey which eventually leads him to decide to abandon the dark side of the Force and redeem himself.
- Lord Farquaad and Prince Charming both try to marry Princess Fiona to become king.
- Mary Sibley was (in her past and present) romantically involved with John Alden.
- Myojin Aki imprisons Hina and starts an obsessive sexual relationship with her, it is hinted he comes to develop some further emotional attachment despite himself.
- Prince Hans manipulates Anna to love him in order to become king of Arendelle.
- Ranger Knudsen has a crush on Velma and he also likes to comment her looks, much to her dismay.
- Spike and Angel towards Buffy, causing both to frequently sway between villain and anti-hero.
- Rex Dangervest was the love interest of Lucy, considering that he is Emmet Brickowski's (who is Lucy's love interest) future alter-ego.
- Tate Langdon was the boyfriend of Violet Harmon.
- Vegeta fell in love with Bulma and eventually married her which helped to make him more of an anti-hero than a full villain.
- Gideon Graves' relationship with Ramona Flowers was difficult to explain, as the full details were never revealed. Ramona did tell Scott Pilgrim that Gideon only saw their relationship as nothing but a cruel experiment and told Gideon that he didn't really want her until she left him. Throughout the series, Gideon still retains control over Ramona's head, where a part of her (represented by a sex slave of Ramona) is still in love with him. He loses this when she finally casts him out, thus breaking up with him for good.
Pure Evils can qualify as such if their "feelings" towards the heroes are incredibly abusive to the point where they can also kill them in cold-blood outright, or even coax them to join their side, either out of lust or out of pragmatic reasons (the latter of which can still lead to death if their lover's usefulness had expired). If this is the case, then they can and will NEVER show any form of redemption towards their lovers, as their "love" towards them are not only toxic, but downright deadly as well. They can also be Misogynists/Misandrists and/or Abusers that can go hand-in-hand in being Pure Evil.
Examples of Pure Evils who fall under this category:
- Jang Deok-su verbally abused Han Mi-nyeo and threatened to kill her, along with expressing distaste towards females, instead of showing true gratitude towards her in the Sugar Honeycombs game. He even went as far as to assault her in the process.
- Light Yagami had Misa Amane as a devoted lover, who he not only abused, despite her undying loyalty towards him, but he also viciously disposed of her once Misa outlived her usefulness.
- Spence Parks originally had feelings for Alice and was a devoted husband for her, but once his true colors were revealed along with his intentions being exposed, he callously leaves her, stating that he's "missing her already", also showing no care for wiping out humanity by releasing the T-Virus.
- Medusa Gorgon basically drove Professor Franken Stein towards insanity, especially by having brainwashed him and consuming him towards madness.
- Adrian Griffin was incredibly abusive and violent towards his own spouse Cecilia, who not only went as far as to frame her for the crimes she did not commit to the point where she was sent to a mental institute, he had also gotten her pregnant without her consent, making it rape altogether.
- Catalina who was extremely abusive towards Carl Johnson, who even finds her too depraved to count as his love interest, and Claude, who initially loved her after leaving CJ, but then backstabbed him by shooting him and leaving him for dead (incarcerated, more likely) after a bank robbery. She even referred Claude as "small time" as a result of her betrayal.
