They told me you were hard, I can't believe you're such a pushover! Now get out of my sight and MY restart!
~ Cathy Carter Smith to Pauline Campbell Jones, her most famous quote.

Cathy Carter-Smith is a minor antagonist in The League of Gentlemen franchise. Appearing as a very minor antagonist in series 2 before making cameo appearances in two live shows.

She is Pauline Campbell-Jones's replacement as a restart officer and quickly the two find themselves to be enemies.

She was portrayed by Reece Shearsmith who also portrayed Edward, Geoff Tipps and Papa Lazarou in the same series, as well as Ray, Hector, Mr. Warren and George in Inside No. 9.

Biography[]

Cathy Carter-Smith makes her only televised appearance in the opening sketch for the Job Centre segments in series two where she acts as Pauline's restart instructor after reminding her that she was fired from her position as a restart officer due to violent conduct. She then begins the lesson by making all of the patrons start work on the computers and asks Pauline how far they've went with them before being proudly told by Pauline that they've been using pens instead. In response Cathy takes the pen Pauline has wrapped around her neck and snaps it.

The two then engaged in a cat fight after this before Cathy has had enough and kicks Pauline off the course, followed by Mickey who begins standing on the table as an act of respect much to her annoyance.

Presumably she still works at the restart centre by the end of the series.

Personality[]

While a strict, rude and intimidating woman Cathy was actually in many ways superior to Pauline as a restart instructor as she appeared more professional than the latter and treated her job seekers with more respect, as though she actually was trying to help them, in spite of that however she does retain her predecessor's condescending attitude towards them.

Appearance[]

Cathy is a middle-aged, overweight woman with black hair styled into a bob and large black glasses. She is only seen wearing professional work clothes and has pale skin.

Trivia[]

  • Reece Shearsmith's portrayal of Cathy was likely done due to him feeling uncomfortable at the idea of portraying Pauline due to his own unpleasant experience on a restart course with an officer who looked and behaved in a similar manner to Pauline, Cathy Carter Smith appears to be a what if scenario for what could have happened had Reece played Pauline.
