Villain Overview

Hey Adora.
~ Catra most famous catchphrase in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.

Catra is a villainess in the animated TV series She-Ra and is part of the Masters of the Universe franchise.  She is the Force-Captain of Hordak's Evil Horde (a position previously held by Adora before she defected). Her trademark is a magical mask, given to her by Hordak, who in turn had stolen it from the queen of the Magicats. Catra could transform into a purple panther of formidable strength by pulling the mask over her eyes. Even in human form, however, Catra had such confidence in her own skills that she was prepared to take on Huntara, one of the most ruthless warriors in the galaxy.

In the original series, she was voiced by Melendy Britt. In She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, she is voiced by AJ Michalka.

Personality

1985

The deliciously comical feline voice bestowed upon the character by Melendy Britt belied Catra's extremely cruel and calculating ways. The only characters that Catra evinced any tenderness towards were her pet lion Clawdee and the handsome pirate Sea Hawk, although the latter evoked Catra's wrath when he paired with Adora. The vain feline Force Captain had no regard or concern for even her fellow members of the Evil Horde, although Entrapta seemed to come as close to being a friend of Catra's as anyone could get.

2018

You try so hard to play the “Big Bad Villain” but your heart has never been it has it?
~ Double Trouble describing who Catra is.

This version of Catra is a character significantly different from its original counterpart.

Adora's best friend since a very young age, Catra felt like living in the shadow of Adora since always and this is what favored her darkest personality. This also creates in her a feeling of inferiority because since the desertion of Adora, she has more than once tried to prove to her superiors but especially to herself, that she was better than Adora. This is also what ended up making her face those she feared the most, like Shadow Weaver or Hordak.

Apart from Adora, Catra is not a very social person and it gets worse in the following seasons, as she never really appreciated the friendship of scorpia or like when she was younger and that she struck a new friend from Adora because she thought her best friend had replaced her, but even after the misunderstanding resolved, Catra reacted badly when Adora asked her to apologize and make other friends.

Overall, Catra is a pretty mean, sarcastic and excitable character by nature, something that doesn't really change even after Adora leaves.

Despite everything, Catra was still able to change for the better since Double Trouble had emotionally broken her. She risked her life for freeing Glimmer from Horde Prime just for doing one good thing in her life and even apologized to Adora for all she did. When she joined Adora and her friends, Catra gradually began to move away from the power-hungry antagonist she once was.

Biography

1985

Catra first appears in He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret Of The Sword as a minor antagonist. Its most important scene is when it takes its feline form to fight against the Rebellion. She tries to attack He-Man, only to get knocked down by Cringer and lose her mask in the process before running away from the tiger.

Following her first appearance, she is a regular villain in the Filmation animated series She-Ra: Princess of Power.

2018

In She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, she is a young humanoid panther/cat and childhood friend of Adora until Adora decided to join the Rebellion upon learning the truth and is the main deuteragonist. At first, she felt majorly hurt about Adora's betrayal, but she soon realized that with Adora gone, she could accomplish much more, taking Adora's place as Force Captain and ultimately becomes Adora's archenemy. At the end of the first season, she replaces Shadow Weaver as the Hordak's second-in-command. In the fourth season, she successfully overthrows Hordak and forces the latter to make her co-leader of the Horde. She is the deuteragonist turned secondary antagonist of the first season, the secondary antagonist of the second and third seasons, and one of the two main antagonists of the fourth season alongside Light Hope. In the fifth season, Catra ends up regretting her old actions and reconciles with Adora before helping her to face Horde Prime. In the series finale, Catra admitted that she has always loved Adora.

Quotes

Hey, Adora. How's it hanging? (Adora: Catra. Did you really show up late and let us do all the hard parts? That is low, even for you.) Aw. You know nothing's too low for me. [Laughing] Now come on, you look stupid hanging down there.
~ Catra's first quote in the reboot.
You should've seen your face. You were like, "Aah, no! Betrayal."
~ Catra making fun of Adora.
Adora! Please! You have to wake up! You can't give up. You have never given up on anything in your life. Not even on me. So, don't you dare start now! (Adora: It's too late. I've failed.) No! No! I've got you. I'm not letting go. Don't you get it? I love you. I always have. So, please, just this once...stay. Stay.
~ Catra confessing her love for Adora while trying to bring her back.
