The Cats are the main antagonists of the 2013 indie game BattleBlock Theater.
Appearance[]
The cats all look similar to anthropomorphic tabby cats or ginger munchkins with square-shaped bodies, dotted eyes and black prison guard outfits. They have been shown to have retractable claws and sharp fangs when their mouths are opened.
Biography[]
The exact origins of the cats are unknown even by the narrator, who theorizes that they could be aliens, the result of a genetic experiment, or simply evolved versions of normal cats.
Long before the events of the game, the cats worked as performers for BattleBlock Theater back when it was run by the late Purrham Furbottom. After Purrham pooped himself to death, the cats disposed of his body by dumping it in the ocean. The cats used Purrham's hat to signify who their leader was, and had many different individuals run the theater throughout the ages, the souls of all of which inhabited the hat after their deaths, according to the narrator's speculation.
When the S.S. Friendship crashed onto the island of which BattleBlock Theater was based, and likely long before then, the cats went insane for unknown reasons and began to use captured prisoners, including those of their own kind, as performers in extremely deadly shows featuring spikes, lasers, robots armed with rockets and other traps. The shipmates of the S.S. Friendship were no exceptions, and were captured and forced to perform in the cats' shows, aside from the captain, Hatty Hattington, whom they attempted to make their new leader by giving him Purrham's hat.
It's unknown what becomes of the cats or BattleBlock Theater after the protagonist and Hatty escape, although it's safe to assume that either the prisoners who were left behind on the island killed them and destroyed the theater or the cats recaptured/killed them all and continued their search for a leader.
