The Cats of Ulthar are an intelligent race that appears primarily in story of the same name and The Dream Quest for the Unknown Kadath, with both works being by Howard Phillips Lovecraft.
Appearance[]
Physically, Ulthar's cats are no different from ordinary house cats, as they originally were.
Conceptual Information[]
Ulthar cats differ little from house cats, though they seem to have considerably greater intellect, a trait they seem to have received through divine intervention.
Ulthar cats have a much greater organizational capacity than common cats, being able to ally if a common enemy appears. In addition, they managed to instill a certain fear or respect in humans, into whose society they have integrated. Although their inability to speak human language prevents them from participating in political life, the truth is that from a social point of view they receive favorable treatment comparable to that of a wealthy upper class, being supported without having to do anything and being judged everyone who dares to offend or hurt them.
History[]
Works by H.P. Lovecraft[]
The Cats of Ulthar[]
This story explains how cats acquired the status of "sacred" in the city of Ulthar.
The Dream Quest for the Unknown Kadath[]

Pop Culture[]
- In the PSP remake of the video game Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, there is a cat military group named the Cat Forces of Ulthar, who are at war against the zoog tribe. Chandraputra asks one of its members to help Tatsuya Suou to obtain the trapezohedron in the possession of the Faceless God.
- In the manga/anime Mahoutsukai no yome the city of Ulthar appears and, as in Lovecraft's stories, cats are treated there with special respect, bordering on veneration.
