~ Catwoman to Batman.
Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman, is the deuteragonist of the 2022 superhero crime film The Batman.
She is a talented thief living in Gotham City and the illegitimate daughter of crime lord Carmine Falcone who targets her father's operations.
After the disappearance of her friend Annika, Selina becomes involved in Batman's investigation of Gotham's corruption in the interest of finding her, but later joins him in stopping the Riddler's plans.
Prior to the events of the film, Selina Kyla was born out of an affair from Maria Kyle, a waitress working at the Iceberg Lounge, and her employer, Carmine Falcone.
Selina grew up spending a lot of time around the Iceberg Lounge, and eventually learned from Maria that Falcone was her father; Falcone, however, remained unaware that he had a daughter. By the time Selina was seven, her mother was murdered via strangulation, leaving her alone and resentful towards Falcone for his neglect.
Over the years, she became a skilled thief and acrobat, adopting the persona of "Catwoman", and moved in with her friend Annika Kosolov. At some point, she began to work as a waitress and drug dealer at the Iceberg Lounge, with the endgame of gathering enough information on Falcone's operations to pull a heist against him.
Meeting Batman[]
Selina first appears in the film during Oswald Cobblepot's interrogation by Batman, serving the former drinks and receiving packages of Drops to deal later. As she does so, she notices a photo depicting Annika with the late mayor Don Mitchell Jr.—a clue given to Batman by Mitchell's killer, the Riddler—and leaves. Noticing Selina's behavior and that she is wearing the same boots as Annika in the photo, Batman deduces that she has something to do with Annika and leaves Cobblepot. Selina takes a taxi home, pursued by Batman as Bruce Wayne, and receives a panicked phone call from Annika.
From a nearby rooftop, Bruce watches Selina return to her apartment, where she consoles a hysterical Annika. Shortly afterwards, he watches Selina don her Catwoman uniform and acrobatically climb down the apartment building. Catwoman makes her way to Mitchell's mansion, and expertly breaks into his safe, only to be confronted by Batman. The two briefly fight, ending with Batman overpowering Catwoman and interrogating her. Catwoman reveals that she was trying to retrieve Annika's passport, which was stolen by Mitchell to keep her from leaving the country. Batman follows Catwoman back to her apartment, and discovers that Annika has disappeared. Catwoman agrees to assist Batman in his investigation into the Riddler's killing spree, but only in the interest of finding Annika.
Batman gives Selina a pair of contact lense-cameras and has her return to the Iceberg Lounge. Under Batman's instructions, she investigates the Lounge's guests, finding that most of the mayor's cabinet and police force are there. Among the guests, Selina spots District Attorney Gil Colson, whom she begins flirting with in order to gather information about the deaths of Mitchell and Pete Savage, and the historic arrest of Salvatore Maroni that they had all taken part in. However, Selina goes off-mission and chases after one of Colson's groupies when they mention Annika's disappearance. She then encounters Falcone, whom she shares and exchanges with before fleeing into the bathroom. Batman demands to know what Selina's relationship with Falcone is, but she refuses to answer and cuts communication by removing the contact lenses.
Attempting to Rob Falcone[]
As Batman and Lieutenant Jim Gordon attempt to apprehend Cobblepot at a Drop production facility—believing him to be the "Winged Rat" responsible for selling out Maroni to the police—Catwoman arrives, intending to steal the drug money before it can be traded. Her presence ends up blowing Batman and Gordon's cover, resulting in a firefight between Cobblepot and his men. During the chaos, Catwoman opens the trunk of William Kenzie's car, and is horrified to discover Annika's corpse. Catwoman ultimately escapes without the money, while Batman and Gordon detain Cobblepot following a lengthy chase, discovering that he is a false lead.
Catwoman later contacts Batman using the contact lenses, asking him to meet her. Batman does so, and argues with Catwoman about her actions and relationship with Falcone. Catwoman declares that he is her father and explains her origins, earning Batman's sympathy. She agrees to help Batman in his investigation to find out why Annika was killed, starting with finding Kenzie.
Attempting to Kill Falcone[]
Later on, Catwoman contacts Batman by turning on the Bat-Signal atop the GCPD's roof. Batman and Gordon arrive in response, where Catwoman reveals the captured Kenzie, brutally beating him for his role in Annika's death. Catwoman presents Annika's phone, containing a recording of her last phone call, which Kenzie had stolen. Batman, Catwoman and Gordon listen to the recording, finding that Falcone strangled Annika to death for discovering that he was the one who ratted out Maroni—simultaneously, she and Batman realize that Falcone was also the one that killed Maria Kyle. Catwoman resolves to to kill Falcone and Kenzie, but Batman refuses, and tries to talk her down. Instead, she kicks Kenzie off the roof, and escapes while Batman and Gordon save him.
Selina returns to the Iceberg Lounge and gets Falcone alone, pretending to be distraught and begging him to do something about Annika's disappearance. Before she can kill Falcone, he is called out of the room by the news that the recording of Annika's murder has been exposed to the public by Gordon. Selina pulls a gun on Falcone and reveals her identity, preparing to shoot him. Batman cuts the Lounge's power, enabling Falcone to evade the shot and escape Selina. She pursues, although Falcone manages to overpower and strangle her, taunting Selina with the knowledge that she will die the same way her mother did. Batman intervenes and stops Falcone, convincing Selina not to kill Falcone and let him destroy her life any further. Ultimately, Falcone ends up being killed by the Riddler as Batman brings him to the police, while Selina looks on.
Fighting Riddler's Followers and Leaving Gotham[]
After Riddler enacts his master plan by flooding Gotham, Selina arrives in Gotham Square Garden, witnessing Batman's fight with Riddler's Cult upon the railing. She quickly joins him in battle, fighting off one of Riddler's followers as he tries to shoot the injured Batman. However, the follower gets back up and attacks Selina, forcing Batman to inject himself with an adrenaline solution in order to save her. Selina watches in horror as Batman savagely beats the man down, and intervenes before he beats him to death. She then watches as Batman jumps to stop a severed powerline from electrocuting the water below and leads the trapped civilians to safety.
In the aftermath, Selina visits her mother's grave, where Batman joins her. Selina declares that Gotham is beyond saving and that she is going to start a new life in Blüdhaven, asking Batman to come along with her. A moment later, the Bat Signal lights up, and Selina remarks that Batman is "already spoken for", accepting that he won't be able to give up on Gotham. She and Batman ride out of the cemetery together, before ultimately going their separate ways.
Trivia[]
Zoë Kravitz is the tenth actress to portray Catwoman in live-action, following Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether, Eartha Kitt, Michelle Pfeiffer, Casey Elizabeth Easlick, Halle Berry, Anne Hathaway, Camren Bicondova, and Lili Simmons.
This isn't the first time where Zoë Kravitz played the character.
Like many other incarnations of Catwoman, the Reevesverse incarnation is portrayed as being the daughter of Carmine Falcone, a plot point first introduced in the comic series Batman: The Long Halloween.
Fittingly, Batman: The Long Halloween was one of the many comics that The Batman drew inspiration from.
This is the first depiction of Catwoman's relationship to Falcone in live-action.
