You poor idiot. You were really close to succeeding. But you should've been smarter than that. Did you honestly think that someone like you can play with someone like me and get away with it? (Lázaro: No. But I enjoyed doing it.) [spits on his face]
~ Cayetana taunting Lázaro after he was tricked into believing she was helping him escape

Cayetana Aldama is the secondary antagonist of the Netflix 2020 miniseries Someone Has to Die. She is the daughter of the Aldamas, a wealthy marriage with a high-ranking reputation in Spanish society during the '50s. They set up Cayetana to be engaged to Gabino, son of the Falcón family, later teaming up with Gregorio and Amparo to exact her revenge on both him and his friend Lázaro.

She is portrayed by Ester Expósito, who also portrayed Carla Rosón in Elite.

Biography[]

Cayetana and her brother Alonso are practicing their pigeon-shooting skills at the prestigious country club while bickering over who is the best. She announces to Alonso that Gabino is returning to Spain after 10 years abroad in Mexico, away from his family, with Cayetana voicing her intentions to marry Gabino and have a future with him. She attends the dinner hosted by the Falcón family where she meets and becomes attracted to Gabino's friend, Lázaro, who is a dancer, despite Amparo, the matriarch of the family, and Alonso (also Gabino's childhood friend) voicing their disapproval of him.

Unbeknownst to her, the Aldamas and the Falcones, Gabino is secretly gay, a secret he's been hiding due to his family's conservatism.

The next night, Gabino, Lázaro and Cayetana watch El Rapto at the cinema theatre. As they exit and approach the car to continue entertaining themselves, Gabino excuses himself to get a cigarette, at which point Cayetana kisses Lázaro. Gabino sees them and is furious. They get in the car and, as Gabino drives, he purposefully takes the wrong way and stops in the middle of nowhere, abruptly ending their night. Gabino then demands that Cayetana get off the car. When she refuses, Gabino forcefully drags Cayetana out and forces her to go home by foot, before he drives off, much to Cayetana's fury while she insults him and leaves in a huff. The following day, Gabino is ordered to apologize to Cayetana's family for his poor treatment towards her, but Gabino refuses, believing that he didn't do anything wrong, and instead goes to practice pigeon-shooting at the country club, where Alonso still acts cold and distant. Mina, his mother, apologizes on Gabino's behalf, but Cayetana's mother Pilar is very displeased with the incident and reacts indifferently.

While Lázaro stays home, Rosario, the maid, tells him that Cayetana is paying him a visit. Although very reluctant, Lázara agrees to go with Cayetana and her friends to the carnival. However, it is very clear that she has intentions of seducing him. When Lázaro deduces this, he rejects her advances and leaves under the false pretext of buying her a cotton candy, but later Lázaro is nowhere to be seen. Suspicious, Cayetana asks the woman in charge if she has seen a mexican in the stand, but says that she doesn't recall that. Out of anger for being stood up, Cayetana (after her friends gossip about them) tells her parents and Alonso that Gabino is gay and he and Lázaro are lovers, but Alonso tells her not to get herself too carried away, as they are only mere rumours about the subject. When Lázaro stops by at the country club, he spots an attractive woman and follows her. Asking her name, she leaves and Cayetana shows up. It turns out that Cayetana was testing Lázaro to disprove the rumours about him and Gabino. However, she mocks Lázaro with the fact that Gabino would never pass that test because he's gay and threatens him into staying away from him. Disappointed and disgusted with her actions, Lázaro leaves the club. He catches up with Gabino while they talk about why Gabino hid from him his sexual orientation; Gabino replies that he didn't want to ruin their friendship. As the two hug, they are seen from afar by Cayetana, who confirms her suspicions to her father, calling both of them "faggots" (even though Lázaro only prefers women).

Trivia[]

  • Ironically and coincidentally, Cayetana is also the name of another villainous female character from Elite.
    • Both of them are blondes.
    • Cayetana Grajera from Elite was portrayed by Georgina Amorós, while Cayetana Aldama from Someone Has to Die was portrayed by Ester Expósito, both of whom appeared together in the former series as Cayetana and Carla Rosón respectively.
    • While Grajera reforms, Aldama does not.
    • Grajera comes from a poor family while Aldama, just like Carla, comes from a wealthy family. However, Grajera was a con artist and a swindler while Aldama is a socialite.
  • In an interview, Ester Expósito even made some comparisons of her character to Carla, mainly both coming from wealthy families. The only difference is the period where the series took place, in which Cayetana was raised through a chauvinistic education.
