Cayetana Grajera is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Lu Montesinos) in the overall first story arc and a major protagonist in the overall second story arc of the Netflix series, Elite.

She serves as one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Lu Montesinos) of the second season, the secondary antagonist of the third season, and a major protagonist of the fourth and fifth seasons.

She comes from a poor family and enrolls in Las Encinas on a scholarship after Christian is forced to leave due to a motorcyle accident. She pretends to be rich in order to be accepted in the school's elitist clique of popular students, befriending Lu, who gets suspicious and eventually exposes her after she finds out. Later, she falls in love with Polo, who admits to having murdered Marina and decides to protect him and prevent anyone from turning him in. After his death, Cayetana accepts her current social status and is employed as the school's janitor, eventually becoming friends with the original remaining students.

She is portrayed by Georgina Amorós in her first villainous role.

Personality[]

Cayetana has a complex personality, and had no issue pretending to be something she is not — an affluent elite. She has no issues borrowing, and sometimes stealing from her clients in order to impress her friends.

Biography[]

Background[]

Cayetana is a transfer student at Las Encinas. She comes from a poor background. Her mother is a maid and Cayetana often helps her mother do cleaning jobs around town. Her mother started to work at Las Encinas as a janitor, which enabled Cayetana to get a scholarship to attend the school. She lives with her mother and her unnamed grandfather in a small apartment.

At one point, her compulsive lying started when she was younger, tricking a teacher into thinking her mother died in order to get away with a homework she was due to turn in and even provided a doctored note. Cayetana was able to convince her to let her change schools before she got caught on her lie.

Cayetana is ashamed of her past and wants a fresh start, so she poses as a rich student to try and blend in with the other students. She befriends Lu and has a crush on Polo.

Season 2[]

Cayetana transfers to Las Encinas as a scholarship student, filling in for Christian's now vacant space after being seriously injured in a car accident. Once there, Cayetana pretends to be a wealthy student with her parents travelling a lot for business in order to be welcomed into the rich kids' inner cirlce, posting tons of selfies and is nicknamed a "social media guru". However, Lu is suspicious of her and pretends to befriend her in order to investigate more. She let Lu, Guzmán and Valerio in a luxurious house, claiming to be living alone and with a maid on rare occasions where she starts an impromptu party with the three of them. In reality, she was hired to look after the dog of the family who owns the house. Cayetana works to hide her poor background. She steals fancy clothing from cleaning clients to try and pose as someone who can afford designer clothing. She forces her mother to keep her secret, even though her mom works at the school and wants to call Cayetana her daughter in public.

Believing that Cayetana is the only person who never lied to her, Lu eventually accepts her as a friend, even getting invited at the elite parties with Lu's friends and keeps up the charade of being a rich girl. However, some start having their suspicions, particularly Rebeka whom she strongly dislikes, when she deduces her true identity through her mother who had employed them to keep their house tidy for an upcoming Halloween party. During the party, Rebeka uses a "Never, have I ever" game as a way to make teasing hints at Cayetana's poor background. Speaking privately, Cayetana explains to Rebeka all of the sacrifices she has made to be truly accepted. She is also among those students who believe Nano, Samuel's brother, to be guilty of murdering Marina, Guzmán's sister, shown when she spots Nano at the party and tips Guzmán off about his presence, prompting a furious Guzmán to retaliate violently, before Samuel instead gets ahead of him and beats up his brother when he tries to harm Carla. Cayetana also has a crush on Polo, after saving him from drowning at the pool but he is not interested in her until she tells him about her true social status, to which Polo starts aiding her in getting back to she school after Lu publicly exposes her as a liar and Cayetana, in return, helps him avoid imprisonment for being Marina's killer by hiding the murder weapon that implicates, thus making Polo return to the school on lack of evidence and falsely denying his own confession to the Inspector.

Season 3[]

Cayetana is one of the only students to stick by Polo's side after his release from custody; she continues to hide the trophy therefore ensuring Polo remains free, even after Carla (blackmailed by her father, who fears they go bankrupt, into distancing herself from Samuel) falsely withdraws at the court her confession about Polo, saying she made it all up to get back at him. Lu calls her out, reminding Cayetana of her wealthy lifestyle lie, when she defends Polo. After Samuel, Guzmán, Rebeka and Valerio are expelled by Azucena (particularly the formers on account of Polo's mother who is fed up with their constant bullying), Cayetana still shows no remorse for her actions, when she defends Polo as Samuel tries to beat him up and insults Rebeka assuring that she would end up in prison just like her mother, yet Polo is filled with guilt because Samuel and Guzmán didn't deserve this, let alone in their last day of school and ignores a voice message of Cayetana asking him to convince his mothers to get Valerio readmitted, again showing she didn't care the two of them and Rebeka got expelled. At the graduation, Polo finally breaks up with Cayetana, seeing that she wasn't in love with him but with the life he was going to provdide her with his wealth. Cayetana begs him to reconsider, but Polo has already made up his mind, including when she tries to stop him from giving the trophy to the police and turning himself in, as his first act of redemption towards the people he hurt before. He is also angered at Cayetana after finding out she forwarded a tweet (revealing his involvement in Marina's murder) to London and other schools refusing to admit him, even though she states that she didn't want to lose him.

Following Polo's death, Cayetana seems to be the only student — alongside Guzmán — that is truly saddened by the death. Nevertheless, she helps cover up the death as a suicide, citing that she always genuinely loved Polo. Despite Polo's mothers offering to pay for Cayetana's education in any college she wants to apply to — as Polo's final wishes — Cayetana declines, remarking that she needs to come to terms with her economic and social class, having finally accepted her humble roots, but that doesn't stop her from achieving future goals and they happily accept her decision and is later employed as the school's new cleaning lady.

Trivia[]

  • After her introduction, Cayetana was the subject of hatred from the entire fandom due to her deceitful actions in the second season, especially after choosing to protect a murderer with whom she has fallen in love with. However, following her redemption in the third season, it dissipates as the fourth season, which was met with mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike (after the departure of most of the original characters), makes Cayetana more popular among the fans now that she's no longer obsessed with money and luxuries and living content with her lifestyle, probably one of the few positive aspects of the entire season.
  • The name of her Instagram account is @_therealcayetana. This irony clearly foreshadows Cayetana's scheme of posing as a rich student and lying to everyone about having a luxurious lifestyle.
