“ | First, thou shalt not drink the blood of thinking creatures. Second, thou shalt obey me in all things. Third, thou shalt not leave my side, unless directed. Fourth, thou shalt know that thou art mine. | „ |
~ Cazador Szarr's most infamous quote. |
Cazador Szarr is a major antagonist in the 2023 fantasy video game Baldur's Gate III. He is the main antagonist of Astarion Ancunín's storyline the Pale Elf.
He is a High-Elf Vampire lord in Baldur's Gate, who is the master of his spawn, one of them including Astarion. He is an incredibly cruel and abusive tormentor who had physically and psychologically abused his spawn with an iron fist, with Astarion being the most notable victim.
He is voiced by Graham Hoadly.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
Cazador comes from the Szarr family, who were once wealthy merchants. His vampiric sire was Vellioth the Martinet, who treated him extremely cruelly, even impaling him for over a decade as punishment for trying to overthrow him. Eventually, Cazador was able to kill Vellioth and claim the position of master vampire from him.
Around 200 years prior to the events of Baldur's Gate III, Cazador saved Astarion after the latter was attacked by a group of Gurs. However, Cazador turned Astarion into a vampire spawn and enslaved him. At one point during Astarion's first decade as a spawn, he attempted to run away, but Cazador caught him and punished him by locking him in a tomb for a year.
Cazador had over 7,000 vampire spawn, but kept seven of his spawn as his "children;" Astarion, Leon, Aureila, Yousen, Violet, Dalyria and Pale Petras. Cazador inflicted physical and psychological abuse on all seven of them for the entire time they were under his control.
At one point, Cazador carved "poems" on the backs of his spawn, which were actually infernal sigils to be used as a catalyst for Cazador's ritual to become an ascended vampire.
Cazador's Letter[]
You can find a letter to Mrel Alkam in the Cazador palace that mentions the ascension ritual. After his ascension, he planned to begin to subjugate vampires from other cities, which he directly wrote about in this letter.
“ Mrel Alkam I suppose, as you say, that you have reason to be proud of the expansion of the vampire circle in your city. Of course, Athkatla is more homogenous than Baldur's Gate and you face fewer challenges from other factions and law enforcement, but still, accept my kudos on your progress there.
Enjoy your success while you can, Alkam, for I'm afraid that very soon it will be surpassed by my situation in Baldur's Gate, definitively so.
I am on the verge of a long-planned transformation that entirely changes the rules of the game. Too long have I been content to be merely a major's city's vampire lord when I can be so, so much more. And I shall.
But that's all I'll say about the matter at present, young Alkam. After all, we mustn't give away the surprise entirely!

Appearance[]
Cazador is a high elf vampire with Asian features. He has long, straight black hair and pale skin. His eyes, like all vampires, are bright red. He is very tall, especially for an elf. His outfit includes a richly detailed top in shades of red and black, intricately embroidered with gold thread, paired with black pants. A gold chain hangs from his shoulders as a decorative accent, complemented by earrings.
Personality[]
Cazador is depicted as a cruel and sadistic tyrant who, as Astarion recounts, sought absolute dominion over those around him. His penchant for cruelty was evident even before his transformation into vampire, as suggested by the engravings on the blade of Rhapsody.
“ | Cazador's love of poetry arose after he read one on the naked stomach of a dead child in his homeland. The child was hung from the lowest branch of a tree. Cazador read the poem, and looked at the child, and he knew that here was the artform for him. | „ |
~ engravings on Rhapsody |
Once a spawn of Velliot himself, Cazador endured significant torture, an experience that only deepened his cruelty and emotional detachment. While he attempted to project a paternal facade towards his seven spawns, they were merely instruments for him to execute the ritual of ascension. Astarion recounts Cazador’s grim pleasure in the screams of his tortured victims, though the game offers no insinuations of sexual violence. Cazador's guise as a "father" wielded "nurture" as yet another weapon in his arsenal of psychological abuse. After the ritual, should one delve into Cazador's thoughts as he lies restored in his coffin, it becomes clear that he was tormented by the endless oppression of an eternal existence in a lifeless body.
“ | These deathless dreams hold memories of a mortal life once-forgotten. Of the boy I was, the man I became, the monster that will not end. I sleep, but cannot rest. I live, but cannot die. I am eternal, and I grieve. | „ |
Trivia[]
