Due in part of the success and popularity of Disney's The Little Mermaid, various portrayals portray them as a type of sea witch with the ability of thalassomancy, magic connected to the energy of the ocean. Particular folklores depict cecaelia as sadistic monsters who cause destruction and discord for mankind while other folklores depict cecaelia as neutral beings. Due to being half octopus, cecaelia can breathe underwater and on the land as well. Some cecaelia have the ability to change their skin color as a way of camouflage, much like real octopuses.
