Cecily is one of the two secondary antagonists (Alongside Hildy) of Adult Swim drama thriller Common Side Effects.

She was once the assistant of Jonas Backstein who later became the head of the National Security Agency because of his influence, having her help cover up Reutical’s shady practices and helps with hunting down Marshall Cuso.

She is voiced by Sydney Poitier.

Personality[]

Cecily initially appears as a well intentioned and professional government agency, showing to be disturbed towards Jonas and his actions. However, she is revealed to be just as devious and ruthless as her former boss and associate, helping him in his plot to eradicate The Blue Angel Mushroom and take out Marshall. She’s very glad to bend the law to arrest Marshall, and puts on a friendly demeanor towards Frances Applewhite when interrogating her, all the while threatening death to her.

Biography[]

Background[]

Not much is known about Cecily’s background, besides the fact she went to Yale University, where she was on the rowing team. She worked as an assistant of Jonas Backstein until he helped her become the National Security Director, using her influence to help cover up Jonas and Reutical’s actions.

Episode 2 - Lakeshore Limited[]

Cecily appears in her office as Connor, a member of Reutical’s Peru branch, describes the story of Marshall and his Blue Angel Mushroom, requiring the mushroom. Cecily appears doubtful of his story and says she’s doing all she’s able to, until Jonas, who is listening in the room, expresses his disappointment on her before having Connar test the mushroom’s ability by stabbing himself with a knife and healing it instantly, which leaves Cecily shocked. Jonas tells Cecily that he’ll send his best people to hunt him down, to which Cecily interrupts him and says she doesn’t want to know

She later appears over call, where she is given information that the hit against Marshall failed and they’ll escalate.

Episode 5 - Star-Tel-Lit[]

Cecily appears in her office as Jonas calls her, informing her of Marshall’s location and him using the mushroom’s abilities. Cecily informs that he has a warrant for arson caused by the Mulvaney twins and sends the police out to arrest and imprison him.

Episode 6 - In The System[]

Cecily brings in Agent Capano and Harrington to ask them about Marshall and Frances, as well as the location of the mushroom’s. When both of them lie about not finding any mushroom and simply saying Frances would know, Cecily dismisses them and calls Jonas to inform him of the situation and assuring that Marshall is currently imprisoned.

Episode 7 - Blowfish[]

Cecily meets with Frances, now Vice President of Marketing at Reutical for presenting the Blue Angel Mushroom. Cecily interrogates Frances over the whereabouts of the mushrooms and how they are made, attempting to sway her with sweet talk before outright threatening her with death if she continues on with what she’s doing, leaving Frances terrified before leaving. She later calls Jonas and expresses anger, questioning if he’s going behind her back.
