“ | Although they do not resemble the mythological three-headed dog, this name was chosen due to their nature as protectors of Hell. However, it’s not yet known why some stay dormant despite provocation. Despite the fact that keeping an energy orb stable takes a considerable amount of focus and effort, they always seem to keep one in their hand, most likely as a display of their power to scare off intruders. | „ |
~ The Cerberi's terminal description. |
The Cerberi are large humanoid stone statues that are recurring antagonists in Ultrakill, appearing as the final boss of the game's prelude/Chapter 0 and regular (if strong) enemies in all chapters after. They are categorized as Lesser Demons.
Appearance[]
Despite their name harkening the image of canid beings, Cerberi appear as large, humanoid statues with energy orbs in their right hand.
History[]
Cerberi are first encountered as enemies in the final level of the game's prelude, named after the enemy itself. First seeming like a pair of statues in front of Hell's entrance, one of two suddenly arise from their pillar to attack V1, with the other following suit upon its ally hitting 50% health.
For attacks, the two Cerberi are capable of using their orbs as weapons, both by throwing it as a projectile and slamming it into the ground. Their main weakness is their slow movement, although they can combat this by dashing towards the player.
After one of the two Cerberi is destroyed, the surviving demon is permanently locked into its enraged state, its attacks speeding up in pace for the rest of the fight.
Following this point, Cerberi regularly appear in levels as a challenging threat for the player to overcome. Every Cerberus statue is simply another Cerberus, and whether it chooses to get up seems to depend on whether if it recognizes V1's threat.
Trivia[]
- The Cerberi's models are reused from Untraceable (an earlier, unfinished project of Hakita's), where it appears as mere decor for the game's setting.
- An image of a Cerberus statue is used to preview between PC and PSX graphics at the very start of the game.
- The player was originally intended to fight three Cerberi at once in their original boss fight, although this was scaled back to two due to it proving too difficult for how early one fights it.
- Eventually, the player does manage to fight three Cerberi at once in Gluttony, although at this point, the Cerberi are considered common enemies.
