“ | Is that all you've got to say to your father?! You can do better than that! Such a disappointment. I thought you said you were going to "send me back to Hell"? Your weak soul is of no value to me! Heh heh heh... I'll let you live... for now. I'll be waiting for you, my dear daughter. Cervantes de Leon is the secondary antagonist of the Soulcalibur video games series. He was the main antagonist of Soul Edge and later a playable character in the rest of the games.
He was voiced by Takashi Nagasako, Jin Urayama, and Hiroshi Shirokuma in Japanese and Barry Gjerde, Warren Rodgerson, Wally Wingert, and Patrick Seitz (who also voiced Dio Brando in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Adamas and Kagemasa Toda in Record of Ragnarok and Scorpion in Mortal Kombat) in English.
Biography[]
Cervantes was the son of Philip de Leon, a privateer sent on a special mission from the Spanish king to loot in the name of Spain. However, just as Philip was about to loot from what appears to be an English merchant ship, he realized too late that it was a warship. The warship fired its cannons towards Philip's ship until it was destroyed, taking him along with it. This turn of events devastated Cervantes, who decided to become a pirate in the name of his father. After becoming a pirate, Cervantes decided that he would attack anyone who pledged allegiance to Spain.
One day, at the Black Tail Inn, Vercci then gave Cervantes a mission to seek the Soul Edge, in which he partook since Vercci was the one who gave Cervantes the weapons to his ship, even though Cervantes was against the idea of working with anyone. Cervantes eventually claimed the Soul Edge and started his reign of terror by consuming souls of the innocent, which lasted for 20 years. His reign of terror ended after his defeat at the hands of Taki, Sophitia, and Siegfried.
Years later, Nightmare became the new host of the Soul Edge after Siegfried grabbed the sword in an attempt to avenge his father Frederick, and Cervantes was revived by accident through the Evil Seed at the cost of his past memories. He then decides to feed on the souls of his own pirates to regain his memories and seek the Soul Edge once again, knowing full well he will lose his free will should he do so.
Years pass and the Soul Edge's fragments gather into a single sword to serve as Cervantes' life force, he would later form an army of undead pirates until the Soul Edge is completed once again, which he decides to discard the sword, but will seek it once again if necessary. This effort proved to be fruitless, as the sword would open a dimension to trap Cervantes in.
As the 17th century dawns, rumors of a giant ship captained by Cervantes began to stir, until Cervantes himself escaped the dimension with a new body, now free from Soul Edge's influence.
In Soulcalibur VI, which serves as a reboot of the original Soulcalibur, Cervantes would seek his daughter Ivy as his primary target to feed the Soul Edge. But just as Cervantes was about to land the finishing blow on Ivy, he spared her for being "too weak" and bided his time until he can fully master the Soul Edge once again.
Cervantes' initial weapon was the Soul Edge, which takes the form of a long sword on his left hand and a short sword on his right, but the sword would later use his corpse as a host to transform into Inferno. Upon his resurrection, he switched to the Acheron and Nirvana, the latter of which is a short sword equipped with a pistol barrel complete with a trigger on the handle. In Soulcalibur II and Soulcalibur III, he ditched the Acheron in favor of the female half of the Soul Edge, now as a long sword, but keeps the Nirvana with him. From Soulcalibur IV onwards, he returned to wielding the Acheron once again. His fighting style is mostly inspired by the nitoryu-style of Miyamoto Musashi mixed with eskrima, but with the pistol sword also in use as a keep-away tool.
Personality[]
In the past, Cervantes was a proud sailor who loved his father. However, after his father's death, Cervantes became a ruthless power-hungry pirate who will stop at nothing to satisfy his ego. He also does not care about the lives taken by the Soul Edge, as long as it can satisfy his thirst and lust to steal more souls.
Ever since regaining the Soul Edge, the sword acts as his personal life force, and he becomes more drunk with power as his addiction for souls keeps growing, all in order to feed the sword. Upon coming into contact with his daughter, Ivy, he displays pragmatism as he has no qualms in killing her and taking her soul despite sparing her in the end, all to keep him alive.
Trivia[]
- Cervantes is one of three characters who appear in every game of the Soul Series, the other two being Siegfried and Mitsurugi.
- If only the fighting games are counted, then Voldo is the fourth character to hold this distinction.
- Cervantes is one of the surnames of the Spanish writer of Don Quixote, and de León is also the last name of Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León, who searched for the Fountain of Youth.
- During development, Cervantes was originally going to just wield a rapier, but developers found this style to be "too gentlemanly", and switched to a long sword and pistol sword in the final game. His prototype moveset would be passed on to Raphael by Soulcalibur II.
- Some of Cervantes' alternate weapons are named after rivers in the Underworld of Greek mythology. Aside from Acheron, these also include Phlegethon, Lethe, Cocytus, and Styx.
