Cetus (plural: Kete/Ketea) refers to sea monsters mentioned in Greek Mythology, though they also featured in Etruscan Mythology as well as Bible and Jewish Mythology. The most well-known of these creatures being herald of Poseidon sent to kill Andromeda as retribution of her parents' hubris only to be slain by Perseus.
History[]
Greek Mythology[]
A Cetus is killed by Hercules in a bid to save Hesione.
One of Kete served as herald of Poseidon sent to wreak havoc upon Ethiopia in response of its queen, Cassiopeia, boasted that she and her daughter Andromeda were more beautiful than the Nērēides. Consulting with an oracle in the aftermath of the attack, she and her husband Cepheus agreed to sacrifice Andromeda upon the herald of Poseidon as penance. So, they chained their beloved daughter to a rock and waited for the beast to claim her. Andromeda's plight soon reached Perseus who stepped in to save her and defeat the herald of Poseidon in the process. The account of how the hero achieved the latter varied; some said he simply ran his sword through its back while others said Perseus unleashed petrifying power of Medusa's severed head he carried.
