~ Cooper's last words.

Chains Cooper is the main antagonist of the 1991 action movie Stone Cold.

He was portrayed by Lance Henriksen, who also played Sergeant Daniel Neff in Damien: Omen II, Jesse Hooker in Near Dark, Rafe Garrett in Johnny Handsome, Emil Fouchon in Hard Target, Dr. Jarret in Man's Best Friend, John Milton in Scream 3, and Thomas Magruder in the Gun video games.

Biography[]

Chains Cooper is the leader of the gang of the bikers named Brotherhood in Mississippi. The gang has a supremacist ideology and has murdered 3 local religious figures and the judge who sentenced the presumed murderer. They are suspected of joining their forces with the Mafia to participate in the drug dealing, contract hits and prostitution and many others criminal activities.

Cooper sees John Stone, in fact an undercover cop whose true name is Joe Huff working for the FBI, at a rally during a weekend. Stone is wrestling against another biker. He waits for him in his van with his girlfriend, and asks him which club he is from. Stone replies that he is independent and asks him to go away. Cooper congratulates him on winning the fight, agrees and leaves him with his girlfriend Nancy, and tells him that if he wants to talk to the Brotherhood, he should talk to Cooper only. Cooper thinks Stone could make good business despite Ice, one of his men, not trusting him and announces him his partnership.

In his lair, Chains watches a video of District Attorney Brent Whipperton declaring war on organized crime if elected Governor. Deeming him embarrassing for his criminal activities, Cooper decides to eliminate him.

Later, Stone comes to bring him a package. Suspicious and thinking it's a bomb, he asks one of his men to open it. This is a bulletproof vest. Doubting its effectiveness and to test its functionality, he puts the vest on Stone and shoots him. Shocked by this, Stone jumps on Cooper but is quickly overpowered by the members of the Brotherhood. To prevent him from being killed, Cooper offers him a mission to become part of the Brotherhood if successful. The mission is to kill a person who entered Brotherhood territory with Bolivian drugs.

The mission is a success (in fact, the target was arrested by the FBI). Stone brings to Cooper the ear of the target as proof. Satisfied, he tries to make Nancy smell it and orders Stone to take her and a biker named Tool with him to oversee collects in downtown, even Ice who doesn’t like Stone disapproves. To calm him, Cooper calls Biloxi Police and asks to the telephonist if the police can run for a NCIC on Stone. He tells that he needs this as fast as they can.

The collection does not go as planned because the bikers are attacked by the Italian mob led by their leader Domicci. Chains, along with his gang, visits the critically injured Tool in the hospital, taking one of the victims of his collection hostage. He orders the woman to take very good care of him. At the same time, a video of Whipperton airs on television, with him saying he will step up the crackdown on bikers and that he counseled the Governor to call the National Guard. Cooper breaks the television and leaves with his gang.

In the night, Stone presents P2P to Cooper and says he wants protection and a buyer in exchange of a driver who can carry 12 tons of it. Cooper affirms that the Mafia will be the buyer and reassures Stone that Domicci is out of business.

The next day, he goes to a restaurant to meet the Mafiosi, bringing them a gift. When the Italians open it, it turns out to be a motorcycle helmet. They are confused and Cooper tells them to open the helmet. They open it and find Domicci's head. Cooper offers them to buy Stone's P2P for $50,000 the drum.

He returns to his lair, where he listens repeatedly Whipperton saying the word "death".

The night, Ice comes to visit Cooper and tells that he fears that Stone might usurp Cooper on his leadership. Cooper assures him that he is in control and drops a bag to Nancy when she shows up in pajama to covert herself. He then chases Ice out.

During another motorcycle ride, they are stopped by 2 soldiers mandated by Whipperboot who ask them for papers. Cooper laughed in their face, tearing up slips of paper. The guards begged them to let them do their job. One of the guards is knocked out by Ice and Cooper points his pistol at the other.

The bikers return to their lair and lock the guards in wooden cages. Cooper coldly kills them both and orders them to be brought to Whipperton as a campaign contribution. Nancy is outraged by Chains' gesture but is quickly dismissed by her boyfriend. Another biker, Gut, sharply criticizes Cooper's move, saying killing in cold blood is wrong. Cooper asks him to go on his motorbike. Gut does so and Cooper lights his too but he grabs the protester, takes his arm and puts him in the spinning wheel of the bike, cutting off his hand.

Cooper gives a eulogy to Ice, killed when he found out about Stone’s true nature and incinerates him.

The trucker who is supposed to carry the P2P arrives as planned but asks that his price augments and threatens Stone with his gun. Stone shoots him. Chains leads the convoy to a different place they were supposed to go.

Cooper eventually finds out about John Stone’s real identity and reveals that the man who sold him out was the guy Stone was sent to kill in his initiation. Cooper betrays and kills him. To break Huff’s heart more, he fatally shoots Nancy. He announces to his gang that they gonna kill Whipperton the next day (aka “break the Whip”).

Chains infiltrates the courthouse disguised as a priest while Huff is attached to a helicopter, has a bomb on him and will be dropped from the helicopter when the timer will reach 20 seconds just above the courthouse. Cooper, listening to the trial, takes a submachine gun hidden under the bench. When sentence is passed, Cooper kills the security guard sitting in front of him, and shoots the crowd. Other bikers outside storm into the courthouse. Cooper kills Whipperton and tries to flee out of the building, killing some officers in the process. Huff blocks his way. Cooper lets the biker driving him run over him and hides in the courtroom. Trying to attack Huff by surprise, he got beaten easily. Huff hurls him down the stairs and points his revolver at him as if he is going to kill him. But the gun is not loaded and Chains is arrested by the police.

Later, he watches Stone hand his gun to his FBI boss. He takes advantage of the fact that the two agents in charge of controlling him are distracted and steals a service revolver from one of them and shoot Huff. But Huff's partner shoots Cooper before he has time, killing him and causing him to fall from the top of the capitol.

Personality[]

He's a brutal psychopath who loves to kill. Unlike other criminals who remain in the shadows and commit crimes for money or power, Chains does this out of sheer fun. Chains is abusive with Nancy, treating her as an object to play with and giving her to anyone in his gang and killing her to provoke Huff. His relationship with his gang may seem brotherly given that he's planning a funeral for Ice. But he's less nice to some others, cutting off Gut's hand when Gut disagrees. He is also unaffected when his members are killed in the assault on the courthouse. This comes off as hypocritical.
