The Chaneques are creatures that once corrupted are the antagonists in La Leyenda de Los Chaneques.

Appearance[]

In their corrupted form, they are creatures made of a black mass and covered with both branches and stones. They have a primate-like appearance, and on their faces, pieces of their former calm appearance are glued. They have pink eyes and mouths.

In their colossal form, it is practically similar, but they have even more elements referring to nature, and from their chest stands out that pink glow that characterizes them.

In their peaceful form, they are tiny beings that have a kind of white “masks” as faces, with amphibian-style gray eyes. Part of their body and limbs are made of branches, stones and leaves.

Personality[]

When the Chaneques are disturbed, they become totally aggressive and vengeful, they do not care how much damage they cause, in that form they are totally angry, they do not listen to anyone, they only attack any human that is in the forest and indiscriminately as seen in the movie when they built the dam, they and were deprived of their water became upset and disturbed to the point of having no mercy, despite that they still have some fear of fire as they could not cross head on when there was fire in their way they had to go around.

The Chaneques when they are calm are very gentle, kind and harmless, they are willing to help both nature and humans as seen when they helped revive Nando when he sacrificed himself to destroy the dam and the water returned to the river and his temple for the Chaneques to calm down and return to normality, at the same time, they can become somewhat shy they like to take care of nature.

History[]

Since time immemorial even before humans appeared, the Chaneques were already living in the region preserving nature, once they appeared, they formed a pact to maintain order in a peaceful way and so the Chaneques become the guardians and protectors of the forest and their temple which is their home, they spent centuries living in peace and respect with humans as long as the latter leave their territory intact and do not disturb them.

But millennia later, an event caused the peace to fragment as time passed, kidnapping humans in response as they built a water dam that blocked the flow of the river that went straight to his temple, and that the same beings took it as an offense and a human child enters and leaves the temple taking his Necta Chaneq a totem of their origin worsening the situation.

La Leyenda de Los Chaneques[]

They make their appearance when they chase and catch Joaquín as a group.

When Leo goes to look for his brother, they soon become aware of his presence to chase and catch him, but they flee before the light emitted by the Warlock's cane, leaving their victim free.

While the group of villagers rests in the jungle, they take advantage of the fact that Chucho and Vicente are separated to catch them in a matter of seconds. As their sacred relic is exposed, they are attracted to where Leo, Nando, Diego and the rest of the team were resting, and they chase and confront them until dawn arrives, having to flee as they cannot stand the sunlight. Inside the Temple, they are asleep without knowing that there are intruders. At Nando's shout, they wake up to attack them, and they manage to restrain themselves when Nando tries to give them their artifact in peace. But when they accidentally break it, some of them merge to look more intimidating and return to their pursuit, being Leo the one who is in charge of keeping them away from his brother and Diego so they can leave the place.

In the presence of water, one of them drinks to return to his original form. However, an amalgam of chaneques seeks to attack Leo, but does not achieve its goal.

They notice the arrival of Cenobio, Saul and 2 other men to the Temple, and begin to attack them, until they catch 3 of them regardless of the shots and dynamite explosions. They leave their home to threaten the villagers, being attacked by Cenobio's explosives. Their anger goes beyond its limit and they merge together with their temple transforming into a single Giant Chaneque, ready to destroy the town and everything around it, generating tremors, storms and strong gales. He is confronted by the Ghostbusters Team, but they are no match for him.

Finally, he is disintegrated when the water returns to his temple, and they return to their original forms. Upon Nando's death, they use their power to bring him back to life, disappearing into the water. After that, a Chaneque is seen growing a flower (curiously, the same one that Joaquín had stepped on without realizing it at the beginning of the film).
