Chang is the main antagonist for the fifth season of Hell On Wheels.

Biography[]

Chang is a representative of the Sze Yup company and a labor contractor for the Central Pacific Railroad. Born in China, Chang was a soldier that fought for the Taiping Rebellion, but following the end of the war joined The Sze Yup company and moved to the United States. Chang is in charge of all Chinese workers for the Central Pacific, and he also smuggles workers from Guangdong to California, runs a small restaurant, and sells alcohol, guns, and prostitutes. Chang eventually becomes and enemy of Bohannon, Mei, and Ah Tao. When he sees through Mei’s disguise as a male he tries to capture her and send her to China to be a prostitute, as he is Honor bound to do. When she leaves the CPR camp to escape him, Chang and his company men hunt her down to a local mine and is eventually killed by Bohannon.

Personality[]

Cunning and highly intelligent, Chang is well-spoken, polite, and courteous, but under this pleasant demeanor hides his true nature as a ruthless mob boss who exploits his workers, runs a gang of thugs to "discipline" any who cross him, and fought for a brutal theocratic regime in China. Chang shows no hesitation in resorting to violence and murder when it serves his business interests or in revenge for personal slights.

Highly ambitious and opportunistic, Chang strives to succeed in business at all cost and prove his worth to his partners and coworkers. Chang is of great importance to the railroad, but he lets it get to his head and begins to believe himself utterly irreplaceable. He also greatly overestimates how much people respect him and how important of a businessman he is, as business between the Sze Yup Company and Central Pacific continues unabated after his death. Chang also has a habit of quoting William Shakesphere's works.

Powers and Abilities[]

Chang is a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant, and on two separate occasions, Chang was able to defeat multiple opponents using martial arts alone all by himself, and also claims to have killed ten opponents in a single battle. He is also fluent in both Mandarin and English.
